Legendary Shards are one of the many currencies in Destiny 2 that formed an important part of the game's economy, along with Glimmer. After years of endless exploitation and farmed shards, Bungie finally announced a significant update for this currency.

Earlier today, in Bungie's weekly This Week in Destiny, the developer revealed plans to phase out the game's long-standing currency, known as Legendary Shards. The move is part of the developer's ongoing efforts to streamline and simplify the game's economy.
The Destiny 2 economy team, in its announcement, recognized these differences and highlighted the challenges of finding a balance that satisfies both casual and dedicated players.
"While we know how bad it feels to have your coins , please know that we are not taking the decision to remove them lightly," Bungie said. "We truly believe that removing them is in the best interest of both the game and the players."
The Legendary Shards will be phased out starting with Destiny 2 Season 23
Along with the announcement, Bungie also gave full details on when this currency will be completely removed from the game. Starting in Season 23, Bungie will remove the cost of Legendary Shards from the Monument to Lost Lights booth in the Tower, while Glimmer, Exotic Cipher, and Spoils of Conquest will remain untouched.
Here is a brief description of how things will work after the removal of Legendary Shards in Destiny 2.
- The Monument to Lost Lights will no longer require Legendary Shards for purchases.
- The cost of Glimmer, Exotic Cipher, and Spoils of Conquest remains unchanged.
- The focus of the ritual gear will no longer cost Legendary Shards.
- The release of the Final Shape will remove all “remaining sources and costs Legendary Shards from the game”, as well as from the coin bar in the player's Inventory.

Proposal: Destiny 2: Season Pass price increase
Additionally, Bungie shared some details about how the rewards and new costs will look when you dismantle an item in the game after this update.
It is worth noting that these values may change when the update is activated in Destiny 2. Additionally, Bungie confirmed that acquiring Ships and Sparrows from your collection will be completely free, but dismantling them will no longer reward materials.
These are almost all that were revealed regarding the upcoming changes to Legendary Shards coming to Destiny 2.
