The deal is particularly significant as it is the first to cover 5G between the two companies. 5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology and has revolutionized the speeds and reliability of mobile networks.

These improvements are critical to supporting new technologies such as IoT, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and autonomous vehicles.

Huawei, despite facing significant challenges due to trade restrictions imposed by the United States, continues to invest in research and development. Since 2019, the company has increased its investments in these areas, trying to compensate for losses from limited access to advanced chips and core software. These restrictions, however, do not prevent patent licensing agreements, allowing Huawei to continue to exploit its technological innovations.

On the other hand, Qualcomm is known for its leadership in communication technologies and especially in the development of 5G. This agreement confirms the industry's recognition of Qualcomm's leadership in 5G technology and the success of Qualcomm's 5G SEP licensing program. The company has invested significantly in the development and promotion of the network.

The relationship between Huawei and Qualcomm has evolved over time. Huawei made its first licensing payment to Qualcomm in 2001 and received its first licensing revenue a decade later from Motorola. This long-standing relationship demonstrates the mutual recognition and respect that the two companies have for their technological contributions.

Additionally, the Qualcomm deal follows a agreement Wi-Fi patent that Huawei signed with HP in August. HP later said that this agreement resolves a legal dispute and does not constitute a broader partnership with Huawei. This shows that Huawei continues to pursue strategic partnerships and licensing agreements, despite the geopolitical challenges it faces.

By mutually using their patents, the two companies can accelerate the development of new technologies and strengthen their position in the global market. Users and organizations are expected to benefit from the innovations that will result from this collaboration, as 5G, AI, computing and networking technologies continue to evolve and impact our lives in ways that we could not have imagined a few years ago.
