In a text message sent to customers today, AT&T acknowledged that some iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on its network are experiencing connectivity issues. AT&T said customers should update their software to iOS 27.0.1, despite many affected users reporting that the update did not resolve the issues. There are now at least thousands of users who have encountered this issue, according to threads on the Apple Support Community, Reddit, and the MacRumors Forums.

The text message says: Hi, this is AT&T. Action required: An important Apple software update for iPhone 18 Pro Max is available. Some phones may not be able to complete calls/messages/data, including 911 calls. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately — Settings > General > Software Update. Please contact AT&T or Apple if you have any questions.
Apple's release notes for iOS 27.0.1 didn't mention a fix for AT&T's connectivity issues. Instead, the update fixed an issue with Face ID on iPhone 18 Pro models. As we reported last week, affected iPhone 18 Pro Max users are unable to connect to AT&T's network for phone calls, text messages, or data either continuously or intermittently, and their devices typically enter SOS mode as a result.
The underlying cause has not been confirmed, and Apple has yet to publicly comment on the issue. Notably, the US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone introduced last month to feature a Qualcomm cellular modem. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem globally, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all other countries. However, it is unclear whether this is a contributing factor.

The fact that the iPhone 18 Pro Max in the United States uses a Qualcomm modem, while the other models use Apple's C2 modem, has raised questions about whether this difference could be the cause of the problems. Users have reported that their devices frequently enter SOS mode, which means they can't make or receive calls, send texts, or use cellular data. This can be especially worrisome in emergency situations, as users may not be able to call 911.
If a software issue is found, then another update like iOS 27.0.2 may be required. If there is a hardware issue, however, then that would obviously be a much bigger problem. Users and organizations that rely on the iPhone 18 Pro Max for critical communications could face significant difficulties if the issue is not resolved immediately.
Apple has yet to publicly comment on the issue, which has left many users uncertain about when and how the issue will be resolved. This situation has caused concern and frustration among users, who expect Apple to provide a solution as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, AT&T continues to urge users to update their software, even though the update doesn't seem to fix the problem. This has led to criticism from users who feel they're not getting the support they need.

The irony of the situation is evident, as AT&T is sending text messages to warn iPhone 18 Pro Max users that they may not be able to send or receive text messages. This situation highlights the importance of reliable connectivity and prompt support from service providers and device manufacturers. The tech community is closely monitoring developments, awaiting further updates and solutions from Apple and AT&T.
