SpaceX's Starship rocket reached orbit for the first time on Monday, on its 14th test flight. The rocket lifted off from Starbase, Texas, at 7:48 a.m. local time and entered orbit about 25 minutes later. It then released 26 Starlink V3 satellites.

The flight was nearly aborted when one of the six engines in the upper stage shut down during ascent. SpaceX’s Dan Huot initially announced that the company had canceled the orbit attempt, but minutes later reversed that decision, stating, “We’re not giving up yet.” Flight controllers continued the effort, and mission control announced, “Starship is in orbit.” This persistence and ability to deal with unforeseen situations highlights the strength and agility of the SpaceX team.
Starship successfully launched all 26 satellites, and SpaceX confirmed that the Starlink team had made contact with each of them. Each V3 satellite adds 1 terabit per second of capacity, for a total of 26 terabits, which is about 10 times more than a Falcon 9 launch with older satellites adds. This increase in capacity is critical for expanding the coverage of the Starlink network, which aims to provide fast, reliable internet to remote areas of the planet.
Three of the satellites carry cameras to inspect Starship's heat shield. This technology allows SpaceX to collect real-time data on the performance of the heat shield, which is critical to protecting the vehicle during reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The ability to inspect and analyze the condition of the heat shield helps improve the design and safety of future missions.

SpaceX had planned for Starship to complete about six orbits at an altitude of about 275 kilometers, with a flight time of almost 10 hours and a splashdown west of Chile. However, due to engine problems, SpaceX announced that it would land Starship in a pre-cleared area of the Pacific Ocean after three hours in orbit, as reported by The New York Times. The decision underscores the importance of safety and adaptability in space missions.
The Super Heavy booster made a simulated landing in the Gulf of Mexico as planned. One of its 33 engines failed during ascent and a second failed to restart for the reentry. Despite these challenges, the successful simulated landing is an important step in developing the Super Heavy's reusability system, which is critical to reducing the cost of space travel.
