What new Google Messages features are coming [September 2026]

Like other Google apps, Google Messages for Android tests many features through A/B tests. This process allows Google to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptance of new features before they are widely released. However, it may take some time for new features to be integrated into the stable version of the RCS/SMS client, as Google pays close attention to the user experience and reliability of its services.

From various reports and announcements from Google, this is the current state of Google Messages. Messages for web users will be required to sign in with a Google Account, which offers increased security and better integration with other Google services. As of late April, the QR code method is still available, providing an alternative for those who prefer this sign-in method.

One of the most interesting changes is the placement of read receipts in a circle in the bottom right corner of message and image bubbles. This change, which began rolling out in August 2024, is now widely available in both beta and stable. This feature allows users to easily see if their message has been read, providing more transparent communication.

Additionally, you can now swipe left anywhere in a conversation to see timestamps and the RCS encryption lock. This feature enhances message security by allowing users to confirm that encryption is active. Instead of a top toolbar, long-pressing on a message or image opens a floating menu as the background blurs. This UI change offers a cleaner and more focused user experience, allowing easy access to options like copying part of the conversation. Previously, users had to copy the entire message, which wasn’t always desirable.

With the release of iOS 27 in September, Android-iPhone conversations over RCS gain support for inline replies that include quotes, as well as photo reactions with the actual emoji instead of a simple text description. This feature enhances interoperability between the two platforms, making communication more natural and expressive.

The new Google Keep integration lets you quickly create and share notes within conversations. If you don't see a suggested "Create List" option, open the 'plus' menu for a new "Keep Notes" tile. This feature integrates Google Keep functionality directly into Google Messages, making organizing and taking notes easier and more accessible.

Google Messages now lets you extensively customize conversations with a “ Chat Theme .” Replacing the “ Change Colors ” option from 2024, you can access this new option from the three-dot overflow menu. Be on the lookout for a red flag when it rolls out to your phone. Themes will only appear on your device, adding a personal touch to your conversations.

The Colors option changes the message bubbles. There are nine options, with Dynamic Color being the first option and responding to the background of your chat. This feature allows users to customize the appearance of their chats to their preferences, offering a more personalized experience.

The Wallpapers option allows you to change the background of your chat. In addition to uploading your own image, Google offers the following collections: Animals, Architecture, Black and White, Cityscapes, Landscapes, Macro, Space, Sunsets, and Textures. These options offer a wide range of choices to suit each user's aesthetic and preferences.
