Discord has begun the global rollout of a new age assessment and verification system , aimed at strengthening the protection of underage users on the platform. The process began on September 22 , 2026 and will be gradually rolled out over the coming days, introducing different security settings depending on the age group to which each account belongs.
According to the announcement by the company's chief technology officer (CTO), Stanislav Vishnevskiy, the changes are aimed at creating a safer communication environment, especially for teenagers, without requiring the vast majority of users to undergo an additional identification process.
Discord: Three age categories for accounts
With the new system, Discord accounts are categorized into three main categories: adults, teens ages 13 to 17, and unverified users. The categorization determines which features are available and what security restrictions apply.
The company estimates that more than 90% of users will be automatically, without having to submit documents or otherwise prove their age. This means that the process will take place in the background for the vast majority of accounts.

Those who cannot be classified with sufficient certainty by the automated system, as well as those who want to confirm that they are adults, will have alternative verification methods.
How automatic age estimation works
For the initial ranking, Discord uses a model that looks at certain characteristics and usage patterns of the account. Among the factors taken into account are the years the account has been in existence, the servers the user participates in, and their level of activity on the platform.
The company clarifies that this model does not read private messages, does not listen to calls, and does not analyze the content of conversations to calculate the age of users.
This approach attempts to limit the need to collect sensitive personal data. However, using behavioral data to estimate age raises questions about the accuracy of automated decisions. For example, an adult who rarely uses the platform may have a different activity profile than a highly active user.
Therefore, the possibility of alternative verification is an important part of the new system.
The available age verification methods
Discord offers multiple options for those who need to verify their age. Depending on availability and circumstances, users can choose from:
- Credit card verification to confirm that the user is an adult.
- Age range notification from the Apple App Store or Google Play, where the feature is supported.
- Use of data from Google Wallet, via available identity credentials.
- Video-selfie, which is edited locally on the user's device.
- Scan of identification document, for those who choose this method.
- AgeKey, a reusable credential that can be leveraged for age verification.
Adding different options gives users more flexibility, as not all methods require the same data format or process. At the same time, editing the selfie video on the device reduces the need to send the material to an external system.
What's changing in the protection of adolescents?
The most significant changes concern accounts classified in the age group of 13 to 17. For them, additional security controls, which affect communication, access to content and the visibility of personal information.

Initially, messages from people who are not on the friends list are moved to a separate requests folder. This way, teens can screen for unwanted communications before deciding whether to respond.
Additionally, access to servers and channels that have been designated as suitable for adults only is blocked. Images containing sensitive material are blurredso that they are not automatically displayed without warning.
The visibility of teens' profiles. Their full profiles are only available to their friends and members of smaller servers, according to the company's description.
These measures aim to limit unwanted approaches to minors and their exposure to inappropriate content. At the same time, they do not eliminate all risks by themselves, as their effectiveness also depends on the remaining privacy settings and platform usage practices.
What applies to personal data?
Data protection is a key issue in implementing age verification systems, particularly when identification documents or biometrics are involved.
Discord says that partners involved in the process only return the user's age group to the platform and delete the data they receive. This approach, the company says, limits the amount of information it needs to retain.
Of particular note is the history of a 2025 data breach involving a former support provider. Following the incident, Discord says it no longer performs manual ID checks in the same way it used to.
While data deletion by partners and limited information sharing are important controls, users should consider which verification method they choose and what information each process requires. Transparency about how data is stored, maintained, and processed remains critical to trust in the system.

Which users does the change affect and what comes next?
For adult users who have already verified their age, no new verification process is required. Discord also says that there are no changes to the experience as long as their age category is correctly determined.
Exceptions exist in the United Kingdom and Australia, where different systems are in place to comply with local regulations. The company previously expanded age verification to Texas and Brazil, after those regions adopted age requirements.
Discord first introduced default teen security settings in February 2026, initially scheduled for March. The rollout was then pushed back to the second half of the year to add more verification options.
The gradual implementation of the system is expected to highlight in practice the balance between the protection of minors, privacy and ease of use. The crucial issue will be that the controls operate accurately, offer clear choices to users and avoid unnecessary collection of personal data, without creating unjustified obstacles to adults' access to the platform.
