Meta: New measures to protect teenagers after court settlement

Meta is making significant changes to how teens use its platforms after reaching a settlement in another major court case over child online protections . The agreement with a group of 29 U.S. attorneys general allows the company to avoid a lengthy and costly legal battle that could have cost the company hundreds of billions of dollars.

The settlement, however, is not just an attempt to settle a legal dispute. It includes specific commitments that directly affect the experience of minor users and shows that pressure on big tech companies for stricter child protection rules is intensifying.

Age verification in focus

One of the most important points of the agreement concerns the development of a new age verification standard. Meta will have to create a system that will be able to more accurately estimate the age category to which a user belongs, while its effectiveness will be verified by an independent body.

Of particular importance are the limits set for so-called false positives, i.e. cases in which a system incorrectly identifies a user as a minor or places them in a different age category than the actual one.

For users aged 16 and 17, the false positive rate should not exceed 10%, while for the 13 to 15 age group the limit is limited to 3%. These requirements demonstrate how critical the balance between protecting minors and avoiding false restrictions is now considered.

End of fully personalized content flow

The settlement also provides that teenagers will have the ability to disable personalized content feeds in Meta 's apps .

In practice, this means they will be able to choose an experience that is not based solely on the company's recommendation algorithms. This is a significant change, as social network algorithms largely determine which videos, posts and other publications appear in front of the user.

The ability to turn off personalization gives teens more control over the content they consume and limits, at least to some extent, the reliance of their experience on automated suggestions.

Nighttime notification restrictions

Another measure concerns push notifications. Meta will suspend sending notifications to teenagers from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, unless parents choose to disable this restriction.

This change is intended to reduce constant digital interruptions during the night. Notifications are a key mechanism by which platforms encourage users to return to their apps, so limiting them can reduce the pressure to stay connected.

Default limit of two hours per day

Meta will also set a default daily usage limit of two hours for teen users on its apps, part of a broader effort to limit the excessive time minors spend on social media.

The significance of the change lies mainly in the fact that restrictions will be applied as a default setting and parents will not be required to search for and activate each relevant option from the beginning.

A new era for social media security

The settlement highlights a broader issue that concerns the entire social media industry: who should have ultimate control over minors' digital experience.

Regulators and states are now pressuring platforms to treat child safety not as an optional feature, but as a core part of their service design.

For Meta, the new commitments mean that the protection of adolescents is moved into a more rigorous and measurable framework. However, it also opens a larger discussion about whether technology can effectively protect minors without unduly restricting privacy, freedom of choice and access to the internet.
