Online shopping has become a part of everyday life, but with the growth of e-commerce, attempts to deceive consumers have also increased. An e-shop may look completely professional, have a well-designed website, impressive photos and tempting prices, but this does not mean that it is truly trustworthy.

Before you type in any contact or payment information, it's worth taking a few minutes to do some basic checks. A few simple signs can help you distinguish a genuine online store from a potential scam.
Check who is behind the e-shop
The first step is to research the business. A legitimate online store should clearly list details such as the company name, physical address, contact information , and terms of use.

Don't limit yourself to an email or a contact form. If there's no clear picture of who runs the business, more care is needed.
It’s also worth searching for the store’s name in search engines, along with words like “reviews,” “fraud,” or “scam.” Other consumers’ experiences can reveal problems that aren’t apparent on the website itself.
Don't trust excessively low prices
One of the most common techniques used by suspicious stores is extremely low prices. If a product that is sold everywhere for 800 euros suddenly appears in an unknown e-shop for 350 euros, it doesn't necessarily mean that you've discovered the deal of the year.
Compare the price with several different stores and see if the difference is justified. A large deviation from the market, especially when combined with a countdown, "last pieces" or a huge discount, may be a sign of pressure to buy immediately.
Check the website address
Before creating an account or paying, look carefully at the domain name. Scammers often create websites that look like well-known stores, but use different addresses.
An additional element is the use of HTTPS, usually indicated by the padlock icon in the browser. However, HTTPS does not in itself prove that an e-shop is legitimate. The encrypted connection protects the data transfer, but a scam site may also have a valid HTTPS certificate.

Read return and shipping policies
A reputable store should clearly explain what happens in the event of a return, cancellation, or problem with the order.
Read the return policy, shipping information, and privacy policy. If the information is incomplete, unclear, or full of translation errors, this is a reason for additional review.
Particular attention is needed when the terms appear to have been copied from another website or when they mention a different company than the one displayed in the e-shop.
Don't rely only on reviews
Reviews can help, but they shouldn't be the only criterion. A store may display hundreds of positive ratings, but they aren't necessarily authentic.
Look for reviews on independent platforms , not just on the website itself. Also, look for repeated complaints about undelivered products, refunds, or nonexistent customer service.
Pay attention to the payment method
The payment method is another important part of the control. Particular attention is needed when an e-shop requires exclusively bank transfer, payment to a personal account or another non-standard method.
Choose available methods that provide additional security features and avoid saving card details on unknown websites. Also, never send photos of cards, one-time codes or e-banking codes to someone who claims they are needed to complete an order.

Don't let the offer pressure you
Rushing is one of the most important tools of an online scam. Don't feel like you have to complete a purchase within a few minutes because a message claims "offer ends today."
Do a quick check, compare prices, research the company, and read the terms. If something seems too good to be true, it's worth taking a step back.

A few minutes of checking can prevent major damage
The reliability of an e-shop is not judged by a single feature. , HTTPSprofessional design or a big discount are not a guarantee in themselves. What matters is the overall picture: who is behind the store, how transparent its information is, what independent customers say and what options it offers for payments and returns.
So before you make your next online purchase, don't just look at the price. Take a few minutes to check out the website. It could be the difference between a real bargain and a purchase that costs you much more than you bargained for.
