Another project from the PUBG universe is being shelvedbefore it even hits the market. Krafton has announced that it is halting development of PUBG: Black Budget, a game that was announced about a year ago and had garnered the attention of fans of the franchise.
The development is particularly interesting, as Black Budget never reached full release. Instead, it remained in development and testing, with Krafton and PUBG Studios conducting closed alpha teststo evaluate gameplay and gather feedback from players.
development ends PUBG: Black Budget
Krafton announced the decision through the game 's official Steam page , explaining that an evaluation of the project's progress to date and its potential future direction led the company to conclude that the game, in its current form, could not provide an experience that would sustain the audience's interest in the long term .
As a result, development of PUBG: Black Budget is permanently terminated.
The company also thanked the players who participated in the Closed Alpha tests and shared their observations with the development team. As PUBG Studios emphasizes, the data and conclusions obtained during development will not be lost, but are expected to be utilized in future projects.

A different PUBG
Black Budget was designed as an attempt by Krafton to expand the PUBG universe beyond the traditional battle royale.
The game was first released in November 2025 and belonged to the extraction shooter, a genre that combines shooter, loot, and high-risk map exit elements. At the same time, it contained features that referred to the philosophy of battle royale titles.
Unlike a classic battle royale, however, the goal wasn't simply to stay alive. Black Budget attempted to create a more complex experience, where exploration, item collection, and deciding when to leave the area would play a crucial role.
PvEvP battles and an island in a time loop
One of the game's most unique ideas was its setting. PUBG: Black Budget took place on an island trapped in a time loop , creating an environment in which players would have to deal not only with other users but also elements of the world itself.
The gameplay was based on PvEvP encounters, i.e. a combination of combat against other players and enemies controlled by the game. Thus, a mission could develop differently depending on the player's decisions, the movements of opponents and unpredictable environmental conditions.
This concept also included strange weather phenomena, which were designed to diversify the matches and prevent the feeling that every match followed exactly the same recipe.
Why it never reached the market
Krafton did not reveal any specific technical or commercial issues that led to the cancellation. The official explanation focuses on evaluating the direction of the project and, more importantly, whether the final result could sustain player interest in the long term.

This is an important parameter in the modern gaming industry. The creation of a live-service or multiplayer title does not end with its release. Companies need to ensure that there is enough content, progression mechanisms and reasons to return to form an active community.

A project may therefore have interesting ideas, but be judged to not yet have the necessary foundation for a long-term commercial path.
Tests became part of development
Although Black Budget will not be released, the testing that took place appears to have been an important part of the development process. Krafton used closed tests to gather feedback from real players and evaluate the game's core ideas.
The last test was carried out in June, shortly before the final decision to terminate the project.
This practice allows developers to identify problems that aren't always apparent during internal development, but it can also reveal that a title needs much more changes than is realistic to make.
Krafton is already looking at the next projects
The cancellation of Black Budget doesn't mean PUBG Studios is giving up on exploring new directions for the franchise. The company itself notes that lessons learned from the game's development and testing will be applied to future projects.

The development also shows how difficult it is for a major gaming publisher to expand a successful franchise into different genres. PUBG has become strongly identified with battle royale, so any new project that attempts to move in a different direction has to maintain the identity of the universe while also offering something quite different.
PUBG : Black Budget will ultimately never make it to shelves or players' digital libraries. However, Krafton seems to be treating the cancellation as part of the development process, saving the lessons learned from the project for its next efforts. For players, however, one interesting question remains: how many of Black Budget's ideas will end up making it into a future game from PUBG Studios?
