Meta companybehind popular social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, has banned ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, from advertising on its platforms in seven countries, including the United States. The move, Bloomberg News reported, is part of a strategy aimed at protecting Meta’s user base from the influence of its competitors.

The ban took effect immediately in the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition to ByteDance, the ban also affects other advertisers who direct users to TikTok or other ByteDance apps in those markets.
Why is Meta blocking TikTok ads?
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the ban to Reuters, stating that rejecting ads from a competitor is a standard business practice.
Meta said in a statement that it doesn’t need to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to drive users away from its apps. The strategic move comes at a time of heightened tension between the two companies, largely over concerns about child safety. In August, Meta agreed to a settlement worth about $18 billion with U.S. states, agreeing to daily time limits and nighttime limits for young users.

Part of the compensation depends on whether competitors adopt similar measures.
Meta has called on TikTok and YouTube to accept the same terms, but in September, TikTok rejected Meta ads inviting it to join the deal, saying they violated its rules on political content. Later that month, TikTok reached a settlement with Alabama, agreeing to usage limits and stricter age checks. However, it still faces other cases in states, including a lawsuit in New York over teen safety.

Meta’s ban doesn’t prevent users from using TikTok, but it does limit ByteDance’s ability to reach new users through advertising on Meta’s. TikTok also doesn’t support links that connect users to other social apps, although profiles can be linked to competing sites. This highlights the growing tension and competition among major tech companies as they try to retain and expand their user bases.

TikTok’s US business is now operated through a majority-American joint venture , in which ByteDance owns 19.9%. The app has more than 200 million users in the United States, making it a strong competitor for Meta . ByteDance’s ban on advertising on Meta’s platforms can be seen as an attempt to limit TikTok’s influence in the social media market.

Advertisers looking to promote TikTok or other ByteDance apps will need to look for alternative platforms to reach their audience.
As companies continue to look for ways to protect their markets and attract new users, such strategic moves may become more common in the future. How this situation evolves will be critical to understanding how major tech companies will continue to compete and collaborate in the global digital technology landscape.
