Google today announced Google Playground , an innovative browser-based platform that enables the creation of custom games using AI prompts . Playground is available today in the United States for users ages 18 and older at playground.google . This new platform promises to revolutionize the way we create and share games, offering tools that lower the barriers to creation and require no coding experience.

Google Playground: The new game creation platform
Google is promoting Playground as an “experimental game platform” that allows users to guide the creation of their own game simply by typing in what they want to create. Users can start from a blank canvas, shuffle initial prompts, or use guided support to shape their idea. The platform enables immediate testing of games while offering complete control over creative direction from initial idea to final detail.
Users can modify physics, rewrite rules, customize characters, or revise the environment with simple commands.
Once a game is created, users can share it via a link or publish it to the “Playground Explore gallery”so others can play it. The gallery will highlight games that are “fresh, creative, and fun,” using ratings and gameplay activity. Select game genres will support in-game leaderboards and multiplayer, offering a more interactive experience for users.

Playground is free to use, but Google One subscribers will have higher weekly token limits, depending on their plan. This feature gives subscribers more flexibility and options in game creation. Behind the scenes, Playground is powered by Google’s existing models, such as Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria, combined with a custom framework that has been refined through its own internally developed games and reviews.

Unity Spark and competition
Alongside the announcement of Playground, Google and Unity unveiled Unity Spark, an AI-powered game creation experience that is closer to a professional-grade game development. Unity Spark allows you to create games simultaneously with other users, offering collaboration and sharing capabilities in Playground. A closed beta for Spark is scheduled to launch later this year, and interested parties can sign up for a waitlist starting today.

Meta announced that it will allow users to create AI-powered games on their phones and online for its Horizon, with new apps coming to early access. Games created with these tools will be able to be recommended on Facebook and Instagram, which could give them a wider reach.
Meanwhile, Roblox has begun allowing users to create AI-powered games on their phones, as part of a “Build” feature that is in public alpha testing in some countries.
