SpaceX reportedly in talks to borrow $40 billion to buy AI chips from Nvidia

SpaceX is in talks to borrow $40 billion to buy AI chips from Nvidia, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. Bloomberg also reported that the talks are ongoing, citing people familiar with the matter. Both reports rely on anonymous sources, and neither company has publicly confirmed the plan.

SpaceX, known for its innovative approaches to spaceflight, appears to be expanding its artificial intelligence efforts. The move signals the company's strategy to enhance its infrastructure with the latest AI technology, which can offer significant advantages in data processing and process automation.

According to the Financial Times, the package will combine about $10 billion in bank loans with $30 billion in investment-grade debt, which is being sold to investors who view the borrower as a relatively safe option. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the deal and sell the debt to a wide range of investors, the newspaper reported. Pimco bond fund is among the lenders in talks to participate, according to the two outlets.

The funding, if completed, would be among the largest ever tied to AI development. It underscores the importance now being placed on artificial intelligence as a strategic tool for businesses, especially for companies like SpaceX that are seeking to stay at the cutting edge of technology. The investment in Nvidia’s AI chips could boost SpaceX’s ability to process massive amounts of data, which is critical for its space missions and services.

These chips will power SpaceX’s AI data centers. In August, Elon Musk said the company would build them using only Nvidia hardware. Last month, he added that the Colossus 2 site could more than double the number of Nvidia chips by December. This shows SpaceX’s commitment to investing in leading-edge technology to stay competitive.

SpaceX also generates revenue from this hardware by renting it to other companies. For example, Google agreed to pay SpaceX $920 million per month for access to about 110,000 Nvidia GPUs, which are used to train and run AI models. This strategy not only boosts SpaceX’s finances, but also makes it a major player in the AI space.

Nvidia, for its part, has been helping its customers finance its products. In August, it created financing platforms with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to raise more than $500 billion for AI infrastructure. The move demonstrates Nvidia’s strategy to support the development of AI globally by offering financing solutions that make it easier for businesses to adopt its technology.

Investors reacted quickly to the news, with SpaceX shares falling about 1% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, while Nvidia rose about 0.5%. This market reaction reflects the uncertainty that often accompanies large financing moves, as well as confidence in Nvidia's technological superiority.

This development underscores the importance of artificial intelligence for the future of technology companies and the need for continued investment in innovative solutions. With this strategy, SpaceX seems to be preparing for a future where artificial intelligence will play a central role in its business activities and space missions.
