Aion 2: Released for free on Steam

The grand return of one of the most famous MMORPG franchises is now a fact. NCSoft released today, October 5, 2026, Aion 2, the long-awaited sequel to Aion , attempting to bring the well-known universe into the modern era of gaming. The new game is available via Steam and utilizes Unreal Engine 5, offering a world designed with a greater emphasis on exploration, action and online play.

Aion 2: A sequel that doubles as a reboot

Aion 2 is not just a technically upgraded sequel to the original title. NCSoft sees the new game as a new starting point for the franchise, retaining elements that have been associated with Aion's identity, but presenting them through a different approach.

The focus is once again on the Asmodians and the Elyos, two of the universe's signature factions. However, the new version of the world and overall presentation are designed to appeal to both old fans of the series and players who have had no previous contact with Aion.

NCSoft seems to be striking a difficult balance: maintaining the franchise's recognizable identity without requiring the player to know the entire history of the first game.

Emphasis on action, skills and combos

Significant changes are also found in the gameplay. The battles remain strongly action-oriented, with the character's abilities, proper timing and the creation of combos playing a decisive role.

This approach applies to both PvE and PvP, offering different challenges depending on whether the player is facing enemies and bosses or other players. The choice of skills and how they are combined can significantly affect a character's effectiveness in combat.

For an MMO of this size, character development is also expected to be a key part of the experience, as the player's progression, equipment, and development of abilities are directly tied to the available content

The largest world in NCSoft history

One of the things that stands out in NCSoft's descriptions is the scale of the world. The company has described Aion 2 as the largest and most seamless world it has created to date, with a strong emphasis on free exploration.

The absence of sharp divisions between areas creates the conditions for a world that can encourage the player to stray from the main mission and discover different locations, activities, and challenges.

Of course, as an MMO, Aion 2 isn't limited to exploration. Players will find dungeons, bosses, guilds, PvP activities, and an extensive progression system, elements that have long been the foundation of the genre.

Positive start on Steam

Initial reception on Steam has been positive so far. Aion 2 has garnered a “Mostly Positive”, with over 3,000 reviews shortly after its release.

Of course, an online game of this size is evaluated differently than a traditional single-player title. Server stability, updates, troubleshooting, and the pace of adding new content will all play a decisive role in its long-term success.

Free on Steam and with Founder's Pack

Aion 2 is available for free on Steam, which significantly lowers the barrier to entry for those who want to try out the new MMORPG experience. There are also optional packs to access additional content, with the Founder's Pack costing €21.25.

The free release essentially allows players to form their own opinion of the new game before investing in additional packages.

System requirements

On the hardware side, Aion 2 requires Windows 10 or 11 in 64-bit, DirectX 12 , and 100 GB of available storage. NCSoft also recommends an SSD for the best experience.

The minimum requirements include Ryzen 5 2600 or Core i5-10500, 8 GB RAM and GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. The recommended requirements require Ryzen 7 3700X or Core i7-11700, 16 GB RAM and RTX 2070 8GB.

It is worth noting that for FHD resolution the game recommends Very Low in the minimum requirements and Low in the recommended ones, which indicates that higher graphics settings will likely require significantly more powerful hardware.

Pre-load has already begun, while for players in Greece the game is expected to be unlocked in a few hours. The real test for Aion 2, however, begins now: whether it manages to turn its positive start into a long-term success will be judged by the content, updates and support from NCSoft in the coming months.
