iPhone 18 Pro gains full manual aperture control with Halide 3.2

The award-winning Halide Mark III camera app has been updated to version 3.2 , offering dedicated support for the iPhone 18 Pro , expanding users’ control over the device’s new variable aperture system. This update comes at a time when users are increasingly seeking greater flexibility and precision in their photography, and Halide 3.2 looks to meet this need with innovative solutions.

The new variable aperture system on the iPhone 18 Pro is one of the most significant improvements to smartphone cameras. Apple’s camera app lets iPhone 18 Pro owners choose from a four-stop variable aperture, ranging from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0. This feature offers about 50 percent better low-light performance and gives users more visual control over depth of field.

Depth of field is crucial for creating professional photographs, as it allows photographers to focus on specific objects while blurring the background, thus creating striking images.

The Halide 3.2 upgrade removes the four-stop limitation and allows you to select any ƒ-stop within the camera’s full range. This means users can achieve exactly the desired result by precisely adjusting the aperture to suit lighting conditions and their artistic vision. This feature is particularly useful for professional photographers and photography enthusiasts who want to have complete control over their shooting parameters.

There are two styles of aperture control in the app. The first is Aperture Priority mode, where you set the ƒ-stop and the app manages the shutter speed and ISO to properly expose the shot. This mode is ideal for users who want to focus on creativity and let technology handle the technical details. On the other hand, Manual mode gives users full control over all three settings, including ISO settings – something Apple’s camera app doesn’t offer manual control over.

This allows users to adjust every parameter of their shot, from the sensor's sensitivity to light to the shutter speed, thus offering ultimate creative freedom.

Halide has stated that it is also considering adding preset f-stop settings in future updates, based on user feedback. This approach demonstrates the company's commitment to listening to the needs of its community and adapting its products to better meet user requirements.

Additionally, in this update, Halide 3.2 adds two new film simulations or photographic looks: Dawn and Quicksilver. Dawn is characterized by “cinematic warmth in the midtones and highlights, combined with rich yet soft shadows and subtle complementary cool colors.” This simulation is ideal for shots that require a warmer and friendlier feel, adding depth and character to images.

Quicksilver is described as “high-contrast and desaturated” that simulates an “alternative silver preservation process.” Halide’s developers call it “a great middle ground between color and stark black and white.” This option is ideal for photographers who want to create dramatic images with strong contrast and a unique aesthetic.

Finally, version 3.2 introduces a new 16:9 aspect ratio shooting mode for those who want to use a wider frame. This feature is particularly useful for shooting landscapes or scenes that require a wider perspective, allowing users to capture more detail in their frame.

Halide 3.2 is available for download on the App Store and costs $69.99 as a one-time purchase price or $19.99 for an annual subscription. This pricing reflects the high quality and advanced features the app offers, making it a worthwhile investment for those looking to upgrade their photography capabilities.
