In recent years, Chinese Android manufacturers have followed Vivo's lead by introducing additional "teleconverter" lenses for their flagship phones. These lenses allow you to take photos from long distances, something the phones themselves could never achieve on their own. Today, Huawei has taken things a step further by introducing the additional lens for its flagship model, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max.

This lens is not only a comically huge zoom lens, but it also includes its own image sensor. The 1-inch, 50-megapixel RYYB sensor found inside the Ruiying Z10 is larger than any sensor found on the phone itself. So attaching this lens doesn't just give you better glass. It's actually a complete upgrade to the camera's capabilities. While other teleconverters up until now have had fixed focal lengths, this is a true zoom lens covering 24-240mm, with a variable aperture of f/2.0-f/4.5.
It's practically a camera in itself, using the phone only for power, processing, and software. Huawei has designed the lens to attach directly to compatible phones, without the need for an intermediate case for a mounting point. This is a major advantage, as it reduces complexity and cost for the user. However, the obvious downside to the Z10 is its size. It's absolutely huge, even by teleconverter standards, and you're not going to fit it in your pocket.
But at 346g, it's still smaller and more portable than most mirrorless cameras, making it ideal for use in places where cameras aren't allowed, like concerts and sporting events.
Huawei says the Z10 is compatible with the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector's Edition and the Mate 90 RS variant. These are the only two models in the new Mate 90 series to feature a camera island. The cameras on these models are already impressive in their own right, with a 50-megapixel f/1.4-f/4.0 variable aperture main camera using a 1.1.28-inch sensor. They also feature a 200-megapixel 4x periscope telephoto lens with the same sensor size, and a 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.

The 6.9-inch OLED display of the Mate 90 Pro Max and Mate 90 RS can reach 12,000 nits of peak brightness, which is extremely impressive and useful for use in bright sunlight. The device is powered by a 6,800mAh battery and its own Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which offers high performance and energy efficiency. The Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro are slightly smaller, with more simplified features across the board, thus offering a more affordable option for users who don't need the ultimate camera capabilities.
The addition of the Ruiying Z10 to the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max represents a significant advancement in mobile photography. Users can enjoy the versatility of a zoom lens without having to carry a separate camera. This could change the way users approach photography, allowing for more creativity and ease in capturing high-quality images.
Additionally, the ability to use the lens in places where traditional cameras are not allowed offers new opportunities for photography in various environments.
