Microsoft began rolling out Windows 11 26H2, also known as Windows 11 2026 Update, on September 29. Unlike previous major updates, the new version does not bring radical changes, but rather activates and consolidates features that have already begun to be available through monthly updates.

Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 rely heavily on the same system files. So, Microsoft uses a small enablement package that essentially acts as a “switch” to activate the new features. On compatible PCs, installation is therefore quick and mostly requires a reboot.
Users won't see a completely different operating system after the upgrade. Microsoft now follows a "continuous innovation" model, gradually adding new features through regular cumulative updates. Improvements include a faster File Explorer, search from "This PC", a more customizable right-click menu, more features in Phone Companion, as well as improvements to Bluetooth and security features.

One of the most interesting changes is the ability to move Start to any side of the screen, an option that was removed with the initial release of Windows 11.
As for Windows 11 26H1, it is a special build designed for specific new systems with Snapdragon X2 processors and not for upgrading existing computers. For users of 24H2 and 25H2, 26H2 is the build for the annual update.

To check if it's available, go to Settings > Windows Update and enable the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available". The rollout is gradual, and Microsoft may temporarily delay the upgrade on systems with compatibility issues.
