Meta's Muse surpasses 3 million weekly users and 5 million downloads

More than 3 million people use Meta’s Muse at least once a week, according to internal data reviewed by The Information. More than 1 million send a request to the AI agent every day, according to Jyoti Mann. These impressive numbers underscore Muse’s rapid rise in a digital assistant market that has been swamped by competitors like ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude.

Muse, which launched in the US three weeks ago, has already managed to amass over 4 million users who use it in some way every week. Most of the requests are made through the Muse app, which is available on iOS and Android, but only in the US and Canada. The app’s success is no coincidence, as Meta has invested heavily in advertising for Muse, leading to an impressive 73% increase in downloads in a single day, according to Sensor Tower.

Muse surpassed 5 million downloads on Wednesday, according to a forecast from Sensor Tower analyst Kara Lee, as reported by 9to5Mac. To put that into perspective, it took ChatGPT 56 days to reach that milestone, Grok 103 days, and Claude 492 days. Muse’s rapid growth can be attributed in part to Meta’s advertising strategy, which began ramping up ad spending on Muse on September 16.

Between September 14 and 27, Muse accounted for up to half of Meta’s daily internal ad impressions, with Facebook and WhatsApp giving up a share. It ranked among the top 15 brands by ad impressions in the US in the week ending September 27.

Muse's success has not gone unnoticed by investors, with Meta shares rising 11% on September 22. This increase reflects the market's confidence in Muse's ability to maintain and expand its user base, as well as in Meta's prospects for exploiting the capabilities of artificial intelligence.

However, Muse is not without its challenges. The Thomas Germain spent a week testing Muse and noticed that upon installation, the app asks for access to a user's Gmail, calendar and, on Macs, their entire computer. Meta uses Muse data to train its AI models by default, claiming to strip personal information first, with users having the option to opt out in settings. This practice has raised concerns about the privacy and security of user data.

Security and privacy are a huge priority for Meta, a company spokesperson told the BBC. Patrick Wardle, co-founder of the non-profit organization Objective-See, discovered a critical bug in the app shortly after its launch, which Meta promptly fixed. The discovery highlights the importance of constantly monitoring and improving security measures, especially in apps that handle sensitive personal data.

Additionally, Amazon has blocked Muse from making purchases on its site, which adds another challenge for the app. Despite these challenges, Muse continues to grow and attract new users, while Meta works to ensure that the app remains safe and reliable for all its users.
