Destiny 2: Season Passes increase in price

Destiny 2

At blog of today, Destiny 2 developer Bungie announced a price increase for standalone season passes, which give players access to limited-time activities and story content every three months.

In the future, Bungie will ask Destiny 2 players to pay 20% more each season, from 1,000 Silver (a premium in-game currency that costs real money) to 1,200 Silver - from $10 to $12 per season.

Η Bungie announced at the same time that it will charge 10% more for its season pass ranking packages, which speed up the process to max out the loot-filled progress bar each season. With this increase, the +10 Ranks Bundle will increase from 2,000 Silver to 2,200 Silver (or from $20 to $22).

While this will affect those who were buying season passes to Destiny a la carte, the price increase doesn't affect those who have already purchased a full year of seasonal access via the deluxe edition of Destiny 2: Lightfall - at least not until the next big expansion planned for next year: the Final Shape.

No reason for the price increase was offered, other than the developers' statements: "This will be the new pricing for Season Passes in the year of Lightfall for those looking to maximize their rewards with each new Season, and we will evaluate new approaches to post-launch content in the year of The Final Shape." Bungie also highlighted the renewed investment in seasonal content: "...our teams continue to invest in creating compelling seasonal experiences for the year of Lightfall..."

Although the cost of seasonal content has always been very low, especially for players who buy it all up front with the annual expansion bundles, there has also been ongoing debate about the quality of this content, which is often based on repetitive activities and re-released weapons and armour from previous Destiny expansions or iterations. Hopefully this increased price and the promise of investing in seasonal content means we'll get 20% more from Bungie's live-service pipeline.
