Although Google has canceled and then revived its AR glasses project (Project Iris, reportedly )several times, it doesn't seem like the company has completely given up on making its own AR device. And now it's partnered with Magic Leap, an augmented reality company.

According to a post revealing the partnership, Google intends to combine its technology platforms with Magic Leap's AR expertise and optics leadership.
In a press release, Google's vice president and general manager of AR/XR, Shahram Izadi said:
“We look forward to combining Magic Leap's leadership in optics and manufacturing with our technologies to bring a broader range of immersive experiences to market. By combining our efforts, we can advance the future of the XR ecosystem with unique and innovative product offerings.“

Google is reportedly working on a “micro XR” platform. It’s said to be built for AR glasses, and it looks like Google may license it to manufacturers, just like it does with Android.

For a while, it was thought that Vision Pro would make AR/VR mainstream. While that hasn't happened yet, the fact that other companies are still working on such products may suggest that this opportunity hasn't been completely lost yet. It will be very interesting to see what Google delivers as a result of this partnership.
