Firefox has a problem affecting Android phones

According to a new report, Firefox has a serious telemetry issue, and Android phones are affected by it. The problem is with “ Glean ,” Mozilla ’s “ product analytics and telemetry solution . ” It says it provides a “ consistent experience and behavior ” across the company’s products .

Well, that doesn't seem to be the case. A pretty serious issue was flagged onBugzilla. It says that every update to a Glean telemetry metric comes with a "cost CPU and disk write."

This is said to be the case for two reasons. The first is because Firefox telemetry updates are not aggregated on Android. Each update results in one entry in the Glean database.

The other reason is because the Glean database uses "rkv" in "safe" mode. It is said that no matter how small the update, on each update, the entire database is serialized to disk.

Why is this a problem? Because phones are “inundated with writes in all cases: page loading, scrolling, video playback, booting up.” It is also noted that database serialization allocates and then frees a lot of memory. This, in turn, causes “slow allocation to other threads.”

All of this puts a significant strain on the CPU and also reduces battery life . Excessive recording is also not ideal for phones and can have a negative impact on the longevity of smartphones .

Considering that the issue is now known, let's hope Mozilla addresses it and fixes it as soon as possible. You can read more about the issue here.
