The Nothing Phone 2a Special Edition is a bold addition to the London-based tech company's smartphone lineup . When we followed the design journey of the Phone 2a earlier this year, it was clear that the Nothing team felt this product was truly representative of their unique aesthetic.

Not only did the Phone 2a's upgraded cameras and revised software provide a more complete experience than the first two Nothing phones, but the striking hardware design also very much represented the "inside out" philosophy that has characterized the brand since the beginning.
The new Special Edition smartphone is a “festival of colors,” building on the pops of red that have characterized products since the beginning, before transitioning to the bright yellow that was recently released on Nothing Headphones. The Special Edition also includes a touch of blue to transform the Phone 2a into a Mondrian.
The smartphone market has remained monochrome for far too long. Even Google and the occasional pop of color from Applecan't make up for the millions and millions of black and white devices that were forced upon us over the course of the decade.

“We are very excited to introduce the Phone 2a Special Edition,” says Adam Bates, Design Director at Nothing. “It is the first product to explore our core color palette. Its overall aesthetic harks back to some of our design heroes from the past, while creating a new expression for a smartphone.”
These design heroes almost certainly include Piet Mondrian himself , with perhaps a dash of Gerrit Rietveld , but also Massimo Vignelli 's 1972 New York City subway map , an acknowledged inspiration for the way Nothing's "bare" casing reveals its ribbons of connectors and circuits.

The Special Edition shares the same specs as the stock Phone 2a – a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro processor , a 5,000mAh battery , a 6.7” flexible AMOLED display , 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, as well as dual 50MP rear cameras . Nothing notes that the Phone 2a has received at least 13 updates since its launch, each of which improves and adds new features and capabilities to the smartphone’s operating system. The most recent included ChatGPT integration (when paired with one of Nothing’s audio products or CMF by Nothing), bringing AI-powered chat queries to your device .
