Volkswagen: Cars of 2027 will be transformed into gaming stations with AirConsole

Volkswagen is bringing gaming into the car, attempting to turn waiting time into a more fun and interactive experience. Volkswagen of America announced that it is integrating AirConsole N-Dream’s platform into select 2027 models, offering passengers the ability to play multiplayer games directly from the infotainment screen.

The service is designed exclusively for use when the vehicle is parked. Instead of special controls, passengers use their compatible smartphones , which turn into controllers. In this way, Volkswagen is attempting to leverage the existing hardware that almost every passenger has in their pocket.

Playing a game on the car screen with your mobile phone as a controller

The connection process is designed to be as simple as possible. The user scans a QR code displayed on the infotainment system screen and connects their smartphone to the AirConsole. From there, the phone acts as a controller, allowing multiple passengers to participate simultaneously.

The initial library includes 20 games, with an emphasis on casual and multiplayer titles. Among the selections are familiar names such as PAC-MAN Championship Edition, UNO! Car Party! and Tetris, while the list is expected to be enriched with new proposals.

The idea behind the service isn't to turn the car into a competitive gaming console. The goal is to capitalize on moments when the vehicle is parked, such as when a family is waiting in a parking lot or when passengers are taking a break from a journey.

Which Volkswagen will it be available in?

The feature will be offered on the Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan, Golf GTI, Golf R and ID. Buzz models from 2027, provided that the vehicle is registered for the In-Vehicle Premium via the myVW app.

This approach shows that Volkswagen now sees infotainment as more than just a navigation, music and phone system. The dashboard display is gradually becoming a central entertainment point, with software taking on an increasingly larger role in the in-car experience.

Gaming is also connected to lighting

On certain models and trim levels, the AirConsole experience can be extended to ambient lighting . The lighting can respond to the game's action, creating a more immersive environment.

Volkswagen will also feature exclusive content on the platform. A specially designed version of PAC-MAN incorporates features from the German brand, with power pellets replaced by Volkswagen logos and bonus fruits from iconic Volkswagen vehicles.

Accordingly, titles such as Golazo! and Memory Match will include elements with Volkswagen branding, giving the entertainment a clearer identity.

How much does it cost after the free period?

AirConsole is part of the In-Vehicle Premium, which also includes features such as Wi-Fi hotspot, Premium Navigation and Premium Voice Control, depending on the model.

For the 2027 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan and Golf, free access to In-Vehicle Premium is provided for three months from purchase. For the ID. Buzz, the free period extends to one year.

After the trial period ends, an active subscription is required. For 2027 models, Volkswagen is listing a cost of $149 per year.

The new battle of the automakers goes through software

The integration of AirConsole is part of a broader shift in the automotive industry. Manufacturers are now investing not only in engines, batteries and assistance systems, but also in software services that can differentiate the in-cabin experience.

N-Dream has already collaborated with manufacturers such as BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Škoda and Tata, which shows that in-car gaming is gradually gaining a place in the modern car ecosystem.

This trend is of particular interest in electric and connected vehicles, where large screens and continuous software updates create new possibilities. For Volkswagen, the AirConsole is therefore more than just a collection of games: it is another step towards a car that functions as a digital entertainment platform when not in motion.
