OpenEvidence , an advanced artificial intelligence tool widely used by American doctors, is breaking new ground for the global medical community by now offering its services to countries with limited access to medical literature. The company is partnering with Anthropic , a company specializing in the development of AI technologies, to provide free access to a specialized version of its platform to clinicians in low- and middle-income countries. The initiative is being rolled out in nearly 100 countries , including Uganda, Angola, Sudan, Haiti and Mongolia .

OpenEvidence serves as a tool that answers clinicians’ clinical questions using peer-reviewed research and treatment guidelines. The platform is already freely available to clinicians in the United States and Europe, offering a rich database that enhances diagnostic and treatment decisions. Anthropic provides the underlying technology, while OpenEvidence adapts the system to the healthcare needs of each region, taking into account local specificities and challenges.
OpenEvidence founder Daniel Nadlerreported that U.S. clinicians used the platform 42 million times in August alone, underscoring its significant impact and utility. This year, OpenEvidence is working with health organizations in Rwanda and Botswana to adapt its tools to local disease patterns. The resources available for diagnosis and treatment in these regions differ significantly from those in wealthier countries, making the tool’s adaptation critical to its effectiveness.
The project in Rwanda, in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Center and Resolve to Save Lives, involved 45 local doctors and nurses who tested the tool and provided feedback on necessary changes. This collaborative approach ensures that the tool is not only technically advanced, but also practically applicable to local conditions.

However, critics of medical AI warn that systems trained primarily on data from high-income countries may not reflect the way medicine is practiced elsewhere. This concern is valid, as differences in diseases, treatment practices, and available resources can be significant. In response, Nadler points out that even in places where clinics don’t always have electricity, most doctors still have smartphones, which makes it easier to access OpenEvidence.
Daniela Amodei, president of Anthropic, said the project is something the market could not achieve on its own, highlighting the need for philanthropic effort alongside technological advancement. This initiative is not only a technological innovation, but also a social intervention aimed at reducing inequalities in healthcare.
For clinicians using the tool, the main issue is access, not the AI itself. Dr. Ahmed Bendary, a cardiologist at Benha University in Egypt, stressed the importance of expanding the tool beyond the United States and Europe, especially in areas with limited access to major journals. The key question now is whether a tool based primarily on evidence from wealthy countries can be adapted for use in places like Mongolia and Sudan.
