Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 , which this year is joined by the 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The company describes both new mobile chips as top-of-the-line, with the differences in specs being relatively minor, mostly limited to improved AI processing, video capture, and gaming performance on the Extreme model.

The two Gen 6 chips are built on the advanced 2-nanometer process, a cutting-edge technology that allows for more efficient and powerful processors. This technology offers significant advantages over previous generations, such as reduced power consumption and increased performance. With the introduction of these chips, Qualcomm is directly competing with other major players in the market, such as Apple with the A20 Pro and MediaTek with the Dimensity 9600 Pro, which also use the same silicon scale.
Both chips share many common features, such as their modems, display specifications, security features, GPS, and memory and storage support. However, Qualcomm no longer publishes detailed breakdowns of the cores in its silicon, but the CPU information given is the same, with two large cores running at up to 5GHz and six performance cores running at up to 4GHz. However, the Extreme is described as having slightly superior CPU, GPU, and NPU performance.
Some differences are more obvious. The 8 Elite Extreme is capable of supporting superior video capture, including 8K at 60fps, 4K at 240fps, and support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec. These features make the Extreme ideal for users who demand high-quality video and photos, such as professional photographers and content creators. The larger shared memory for the NPU should deliver faster and more efficient AI performance on the Extreme chip, while the dedicated AI matrix cores on the GPU (plus more memory) should slightly boost gaming performance when using AI features.

Integrating these AI technologies is critical as AI applications become increasingly important in everyday smartphone usage. From facial and voice recognition to smart suggestions and real-time image processing, AI capabilities can significantly improve the user experience.
With core performance looking similar, the transition to the Extreme chip is relatively small, so it will be interesting to see which chips manufacturers will use for which phones. Motorola is the first to join, confirming that its newly announced Signature 27 flagship will use the Extreme chip. Qualcomm has announced that the two chips will also be adopted by Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Honor, iQoo, Nubia, OnePlus, Redmi, Redmagic, and ZTE.
The choice of manufacturers to adopt Qualcomm's new chips demonstrates their confidence in the company's technology and its ability to deliver innovative solutions. This move is expected to further strengthen Qualcomm's position in the smartphone market, offering consumers more choices for high-performance devices.
