Qualcomm launches Snapdragon Reality Elite and a toolkit for AI glasses

Qualcomm took a major step forward in mixed reality (MR) with the introduction of Snapdragon Reality Elite , a chip platform that promises to upgrade artificial intelligence (AI) processing for wired headsets and glasses. It also introduced START , a comprehensive toolkit for smart glasses that allows manufacturers to create branded products without having to develop the technology from scratch.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amonhas revealed that more than 40 wearable AI designs are in development, underscoring the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in the wearables market. The devices include jewelry, camera-equipped headphones, pins and watches, aiming to give users the ability to carry technology that interacts with their environment.

The Snapdragon Reality Elite offers significant improvements over the previous XR2+ Gen 2. Specifically, GPU performance is increased by 60%, CPU by 30% , and NPU by 160%. The neural processing unit can handle 48 TOPS, allowing a 3 billion-parameter language model to be executed at 45 tokens per second on the device. These improvements are accompanied by better battery life and cooler operation under similar workloads.

The Snapdragon Reality Elite's display supports 4.4K resolution per eye at 90 frames per second, offering a small but significant improvement over the 4.3K resolution of the XR2+ Gen 2. Qualcomm claims that the chip improves head and hand tracking, as well as transparency performance, which is critical for reducing motion sickness and eyestrain in mixed reality headsets.

Reality Elite is intended for two types of devices: standalone video-transparency headsets that overlay digital content on a camera feed, similar to the Meta Quest, and lightweight optical-transparency glasses that embed a digital image into the user's field of view. Initial products using this platform include XREAL 's Project Aura , which features a 70-degree field of view and binocular displays, as well as an upcoming device from Play for Dream .

Although Qualcomm has not yet revealed pricing or a timeline for the availability of consumer devices, the introduction of these products suggests a market expansion strategy.

START, which stands for Scalable Turnkey AI-Ready Toolkit, combines hardware based on Qualcomm’s AR1+ chip with a software platform, companion iOS and Android apps, an AI cloud solution, and three white label reference designs. These designs include configurations similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, a monocular display variant, and a binocular display variant.

The first partners for the program are eyewear maker Inspecs and O'Neill, which owns TitanFlex. Qualcomm has also invested $10 million in Inspecs, acquiring 7.5 million new shares at £1 each, indicating a commitment not only to licensing the silicon but also to investing in the supply chain for these devices.
