Major layoffs at Bungie after the end of Destiny 2

Bungie , the well-known video game development studio, is facing a new wave of layoffs after its run with Destiny 2 ended . In a statement posted to Platform X, the company announced staff reductions as part of a reorganization. While specific numbers were not disclosed, Hermen Hulst , CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group , said the layoffs will include a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some members of the Marathon team.

Bungie acknowledged that Destiny 2 has fallen short of expectations in recent years. The statement continued: “Following the final content update for Destiny 2, and with our future projects still in their early stages, we are unfortunately unable to continue operating at our previous scale.” Destiny 2 received its last update earlier this month, on June 9th.

The decision to lay off staff wasn't an easy one for Bungie, as the studio explored multiple alternatives before concluding that downsizing was necessary to align its resources with current priorities and long-term goals. This reorganization strategy comes in response to challenges facing companies in the live-service gaming space, where overinvestment has led to high-profile failures like Concord and Highguard, as well as setbacks for major releases like Fortnite.

Since its acquisition by Sony, Bungie has seen a series of layoffs as the parent company tries to solidify its position in the live-service gaming space. The staff cuts in 2023 and 2024 reflect a broader review of the company's strategy as it tries to adapt to an ever-changing market environment.

The launch of the Marathon export game in March failed to deliver the expected results, amid turmoil in the live services space. Despite the difficulties, Hulst said that Marathon “remains an important part of our portfolio.” This suggests that Bungie does not intend to abandon the project, but rather to strengthen and develop it further in the future.

Bungie, with its rich history of developing games like the original Halo, has shown its ability to adapt and innovate. However, moving to a live service model requires a different approach and strategy. Layoffs and staff reshuffles can be painful, but they are often considered necessary for the company to be flexible and adaptable to new challenges.

In its statement, Bungie said it will share more about its future projects at some point, but “today is not that day.” This statement leaves open the possibility of new announcements and developments in the future as the company continues to explore new opportunities and adapt to market demands.

The situation at Bungie is part of a broader trend in the video game industry, where companies are struggling to balance innovation with financial sustainability. As player demands increase and technology evolves, companies must be ready to adapt quickly and invest in new directions to stay competitive.
