Tesla EU: Germany calls for fast approval of driver assistance system

Germany is trying to speed up the process for pan-European approval of Tesla's advanced driver assistance system, in a development that could significantly change the way the American automaker's technology is made available on the European market.

Germany's deputy transport minister, Steffen Bilger, said Berlin would seek a joint decision at the European Union level, instead of the current situation where approvals and system capabilities differ by country. Tesla, for its part, sees European approval as important for commercializing technology in a market where it faces increasing competition.

Berlin wants a common European solution

Speaking at a conference in Berlin, Bilger argued that an EU-wide agreement is the most appropriate solution to address the issue. However, if a joint decision is not possible, the German government is considering moving forward at the national level.

Berlin has not yet recognized the approval given by Dutch authorities in April. This development shows how complex the regulatory framework for advanced assistance systems, especially when they operate in different road environments and under different national rules.

Elon Musk publicly thanked the German official via the X platform, responding in German, as Tesla seeks to secure more unified access to the European market.

What changes in the system name?

One of the issues raised in discussions between Tesla and German authorities concerns the naming of the technology. The company has so far used the name Full Self-Driving (Supervised), but the German Ministry of Transport believes that this wording could create the wrong impression about the level of autonomy.

For this reason, the name Tesla Assisted Driving was proposed . The change is not just about branding, but is directly related to the need to make it clear to the driver that the system does not turn the vehicle into a fully autonomous car.

Although it can take over functions such as steering, acceleration and braking, the driver still has the responsibility of monitoring the road and must be able to intervene at any time.

The issue of speed creates reactions

One of the major sticking points concerns the system's ability to travel up to 10% above the speed limit. According to discussions between Tesla and German authorities, Berlin intends to support this position in Brussels.

However, several countries appear cautious. Among them are France and Sweden, which complicates the effort to reach a common European decision.

The vote by member states, which was originally scheduled for October, has reportedly been postponed to December. This issue is therefore proving to be one of the main obstacles to completing the process.

Safety claims under the microscope

Alongside regulatory discussions, the focus is also on substantiating Tesla's claims about the system's safety.

Experts who examined, on behalf of Reuters, the methodology used by the company in a relevant study argued that Tesla's own data does not constitute sufficient evidence for the claim that its technology "saved lives.".

This discussion is particularly important, as the evaluation of assistance systems is not only about their technological performance, but also how they affect driver behavior. Clear information about the limits of a function is a critical factor, especially when its name can create different expectations.

Important bet for Tesla in Europe

The European approval is of both regulatory and commercial importance to Tesla, as the company seeks to further leverage advanced driver assistance features in a market where its position is facing increasing pressure.

Particularly significant is competition from China's BYD, which has managed to record higher sales than Tesla in certain periods this year.

For Tesla, therefore, European approval is not just a technical or bureaucratic process. It is linked to the company's effort to differentiate its vehicles through advanced technologies and strengthen its position in a market where consumers now have more choice.

The coming period is expected to be critical, as European authorities will have to strike a balance between promoting innovation, the uniform application of rules and, above all, the safety of drivers and other road users.
