DJI Dock 3 can now be launched from moving vehicles

DJI has introduced the third version of its drone-in-a-box, designed for autonomous missionssuch as safely inspecting power lines and responding to emergencies. Like previous versions, the DJI Dock 3 is small enough to fit in the trunk of a truck, but it’s the first to allow DJI’s new Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD to be launched even from a moving vehicle, using the optional gimbal.

While the company hasn’t revealed the cost of the mobile launch dock, the new DJI Dock 3 will be offered in two packages aimed at enterprise customers with higher budgets. You can get it with the DJI Matrice 4D for $21,059 or with the Matrice 4TD for $23,409. It’s worth noting that these prices don’t include installation services, deployment, or optional hardware and software upgrades.

The updated base retains some key features from previous versions, such as the built-in weather station, antennas, surveillance cameras, and internal backup battery. Although it requires a power and internet connection, it can be upgraded with a 4G cellular dongle for remote use.

The DJI Dock 3 has been upgraded with an improved IP56 rating for greater dust and water resistance. Its operating temperature range now extends from 50 degrees Celsius to -30 degrees Celsius. However, DJI emphasizes that warm-up is required in low temperatures.

It can communicate with drones on missions up to 10 kilometers away, but this can be extended up to 25 kilometers for fixed installations, such as in high-rise buildings, through the use of relays placed at high points. However, this assumes that local legislation allows drones to operate autonomously or at such distances. In the United States, the FAA requires drone operators to secure a Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) for operation at long distances.

The Dock 3 is specifically designed to work with the new versions of the DJI Matrice 4 series of drones, which are IP55-certified for water and dust resistance and were released earlier this year. The Matrice 4D and 4TD models offer ice-resistant propeller blades, flight times of up to 47 minutes, and a combination of wide-angle, mid-range, and telephoto lenses. The Matrice 4TD enhances its night-time capabilities by incorporating an infrared thermal camera and a supplemental near-infrared light for additional illumination.
