Uber is accelerating its race for self-driving dominance by announcing a strategic partnership with Lucid Motors and Nuro . The deal will see the deployment of 20,000 robotaxis over the next six years and marks a new era for Uber’s fleet, which will expand to include fully autonomous, electric vehicles .

The alliance of innovation: Uber + Lucid + Nuro
This collaboration brings three technology players into a dynamic partnership:
- Lucid Motors, known for its premium electric vehicles, will provide the robotaxis fleet, with Uber investing $300 million in the company.
- Nuro oneof the most innovative startups in the autonomous vehicle, will integrate the Level 4 autonomous driving system, which allows the vehicle to operate fully without human intervention in specific conditions.

The first vehicles are expected to be on the road in a major US urban center in 2026.
“We are excited to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi program, designed specifically for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people around the world,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.
Lucid “leads” into new market – Nuro provides the brain
For Lucid, this deal represents a unique opportunity to expand into new markets beyond the consumer luxury EV. Lucid interim CEO Marc Winterhofftold CNBC that the company is “entering a completely new market with enormous potential.”
Nuro , backed by Google and the SoftBank Vision Fund , is developing a “level 4 autonomous driving system ,” which provides full autonomy in urban environments, under normal weather and traffic conditions.

The new partnership comes just months after the expansion of the Uber-Waymo alliance, which is piloting in Atlanta and Austin. At the same time, Tesla has already launched trial in Austin, which shows that the battle for the future of ride-hailing services is heating up for good.

The Lucid Gravity, the SUV that will form the basis of the new robotaxis, is expected to offer a range of 450 miles, reducing operating costs and increasing use cycles between charges — a critical element for business travel.
Winterhoff said the program could be expanded to future Lucid models.
Testing has begun – What's next?
The first prototype vehicles are already being tested in closed environmentsat Nuro's Las Vegas facility. Nuro was recently boosted by $106 million from major investors including T. Rowe Price, Fidelity, Tiger Global and Greylock, confirming the market's confidence in its technological foundation.
In a joint statement from the companies, the initiative is described as “a blueprint for a globally scalable, commercially viable robotaxi program”a project that could radically change the way we move around cities.

The bet on autonomy
This news is not just another tech deal: it is a sign that the transportation model is undergoing structural transformation. Uber aspires to be a leader in this change, not only as a platform, but also as an ecosystem of mobility services and technologies.
With Waymo, Tesla, Cruise and Zoox in the game, the path to autonomy will be fraught with technological and regulatory challenges, but the momentum is clear: the future of transportation is autonomous, electric and connected.
