This is a significant win for GM, as it has now officially taken over the No. 2 spot in the EV market leaderboard.

Ford's sluggish EV sales in recent months have dropped it to fifth place in overall U.S. electric vehicle sales. Hyundai is in third place and Volkswagen is in fourth. Ford has faced some issues that have led to this decline. For example, the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck faced a setback when it was discovered that some batteries caught fire. As a result, the company was forced to halt production for five weeks. Despite this setback, Ford has determined that with upgraded battery technology, it can produce up to 600,000 EVs annually. However, recent sales figures show that Ford has a long way to go before it reaches that goal.
General Motors should definitely be commended for its success, as it is now the second largest EV seller in the US. However, it still lags far behind Tesla , which is at the top. Tesla does not report its electric vehicle sales by region, but according to estimates from Motor Intelligence, the company sold 161,630 electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States alone during the first quarter of 2023! It is clear that even though General Motors is in second place, it cannot catch up with Tesla.

Elon Musk 's electric vehicle company plans to build 20 million electric vehicles annually by 2030, although many experts say the actual number is likely to be much lower in the end.
It's worth noting that Tesla tops the list in the US, but that's not the case globally. Chinese manufacturer BYD has a 20% share of the global electric vehicle market, while Tesla has 12.6%. As for GM, the company is promising to build 50,000 EVs by mid-year and another 100,000 by the end of the year.
