FAA: ATAP technology prevents airplane landing errors

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has developed ATAP technology to prevent accidents during airplane landings.

Across America’s airports, a disturbing trend is plaguing runways – pilots are mistakenly landing on taxiways instead of runways. These potentially fatal errors have been responsible for 1,641 “wrong surface events” since 2016, with small planes accounting for a staggering 83 percent of these life-threatening incidents.

But amidst this chaos lies a beacon of hope – the development of ATAP , or ASDE-X Taxiway Arrival Prediction, which aims to prevent such catastrophic incidents.

The revolutionary ATAP visual and audible warning system helps ensure airport safety with cutting-edge radar detection technology . This technology quickly alerts air traffic controllers to potential accidents that could occur when planes line up for landing on taxiways instead of runways, giving them the opportunity to instantly communicate this information both in the sky and at ground level.

Since its launch in 2018, this groundbreaking technology has already prevented fifty taxiway landings at Seattle-Tacoma. However, failure to adapt ATAP could lead to disastrous results - aircraft mislandings have caused near misses with other aircraft and put countless lives at risk.

At some of the country's busiest airports, there have been several notable near misses. In 2009, a Delta 767 landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport , in 2015 an Alaska Airlines 737 landed on a taxiway at Seattle-Tacoma , and most recently, a Boeing 757 landed at Newark Liberty International Airport .

In 2017, a terrifying near-miss occurred at San Francisco International Airport when an Air Canada Airbus 320 nearly landed off course on the taxiway where four aircraft were preparing for takeoff.

The number of aircraft in the sky continues to increase, and even experienced pilots can misidentify a taxiway as a runway – a potentially fatal error.

By 2023, eight alarms had sounded warning of an impending air disaster.

The ATAP has already issued eight alerts in 2023, making it clear how necessary this technology. Despite the delays caused by the pandemic, airports across America are rapidly implementing this life-saving software to demonstrate its importance and urgency.

Whenever the ATAP alarm sounds in an air traffic control tower, controllers must act quickly to inform any incoming aircraft to abort their hazardous approach. Even celebrities like Harrison Ford have been saved from tragedy by accidentally landing on taxiways – making ATAP implementation a critical step in protecting all who dare to fly.
