Pokémon Go: Update that was very good to be true

Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go recently released update 0.275.0, which apparently doubles the radius in which Pokémon that can be acquired spawn. Meanwhile, player frustration is growing with Niantic. These disgruntled players are so impressed with the update, they assume it was rolled out by mistake. But Niantic has reportedly confirmed with Poké content creators that it was, indeed, intentional.

Niantic then took it back. The developer redirected Kotaku's request for comment to a "clarifying" tweet posted on June 27.

It's easy to see why some hopeful players might have thought otherwise. The App Store for update 0.275.0 kept things under wraps, vaguely describing them as "quality of life updates, minor bug fixes, and performance improvements."

Initially, the bug – which increases the AR game's spawn radius for mobile devices from 40 to 80 meters – seemed more than a simple quality-of-life update. It made it easier than ever for players to capture Pokémon while standing in the same spot. The “Shiny hunter” players, who hunt for the franchise's pocket monsters in rare colors, known both in Pokémon Go and everywhere else as “shinies”, could benefit from it.

But the bug could be especially useful for players living in rural areas, which rarely get spawns, with few nearby competitive gyms or PokéStop landmarks to use them.

Niantic improved the game experience in rural areas with the emergence of COVID-19 and global travel restrictions, allowing players to temporarily interact with Gyms and Stops from a distance of 80 meters instead of the original 40 meters. Once the restrictions eased, the developer went back and forth about maintaining the change, but ultimately made it permanent in 2021 after many outcries from the community.

This first race for 80 meters, together with the recent gaps, problematic events and disappointing paid features, is the reason why some Go players were initially cautious about this update.

Even the most upbeat fans knew not to get excited. “This is a huge victory for the community!”, wrote an enthusiastic post on the Pokémon Go Hub news site. “In case this is something Niantic will fix in a future update, we would recommend disabling automatic updates for now and not updating the game after version 0.275.0 until a new forced update is released”.
