App Store: Apple announces pricing changes

Apple said it will now offer developers 700 additional price points for apps on the App Store. That means apps can be priced anywhere from 29 cents to $10,000. In order to discourage overpriced apps, Apple requires developers to submit a request if they want to price their app above $1,000.

Of the 900 total price points, only 100 are available upon request. The new price points will gradually increase in value. For example, prices will increase by 10 cents when they are under $10 and by 50 cents when they are between $10 and $50. Rounded price endings (e.g. $0.90 or $1.00) will also be available, as well as prices that start with two identical digits (such as ₩110,000 in South Korea).

In August 2021, as part of a $100 million settlement with developers, Apple promised to expand the number of App Store price points.

Apple is making it easier for developers to manage currency exchange rate changes by allowing them to choose their preferred store as the basis for automatically generating prices across 174 other stores and 44 currencies in the App Store. This way, they can focus on creating great apps instead of worrying about pricing. For example, Apple confirms that a Japanese game developer whose customers are mostly Japanese can set a price for the Japanese store. They also don’t have to worry about updating their prices outside of the country, as exchange rates and taxes are constantly changing around the world. If developers want, they can still set store prices.

Apple is introducing new pricing and a currency exchange rate management option for apps with auto-renewable subscriptions. All other apps and in-app purchases will be able to use these features starting in spring 2023.

Apple periodically changes app prices in certain locations due to changes in taxes and exchange rates. Starting in 2023, developers with apps and in-app purchases will be able to set their own local prices without being affected by these automatic price changes.
