Sony's PlayStation 4 has been a huge success for the company , reaching the 100 million sales milestone . Sony revealed that it sold 3.2 million PS4 units in the quarter ending June 30. This brings the total number of units sold to 100 million.
While statistics show that PS4 sales may be slowing, it is still the fastest home gaming console, according to Daniel Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Niko Partners. In fact, it is faster than both Nintendo and the PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 4 reached this milestone after just 5 years and 7 months.
Sony's PS4 sales have been consistently strong, with 19 million units sold in 2017 and 17.8 million last year. Sony also revealed that the share of digital downloads has passed 50%, meaning more people are now buying digital games than physical copies of discs.
Sony's next-generation PlayStation, likely the PS 5 , is rumored to be released in the fall of 2020. Sony has promised that the PS5 will support 8K graphics, 3D audio , SSD storage , and backward compatibility with existing PlayStation 4 titles. The PS5 will also use an eight-core CPU based on AMD's third-gen Ryzen series and include a GPU that supports ray-tracing graphics. Sony will also offer disc support for the PS5.
Microsoft is also preparing its Xbox Project Scarlett console for 2020. Like the PlayStation 5, it will also support 8K graphics , SSD storage , and ray tracing . It's still unclear how many current-generation Xbox One consoles have been sold, as Microsoft stopped reporting numbers years ago. Analysts estimate somewhere between 30 million and 60 million, which proves that Microsoft can no longer easily compete with Sony.
