OpenAI hires Cursor's head in Europe

OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence company, has announced the hiring of Ismail Elmas as vice president of sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Elmas, who previously led Cursor’s European operations, is the second significant addition to OpenAI’s sales team from Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the past month. German business newspaper Handelsblatt was first to report the news, and OpenAI confirmed the hire, publishing comments from both Elmas and his new boss.

Elmas will be based in Munich, and all OpenAI sales staff in the region will report to him. OpenAI plans to significantly grow its sales team in Europe as it seeks to strengthen its market presence and attract more enterprise customers. This strategic move comes at a time when OpenAI is considering an IPO, making sales growth and revenue growth critical.

Cursor, the AI coding company now owned by SpaceX, was acquired for $60 billion in a deal that closed on Aug. 14. Elmas, as Cursor’s senior vice president for EMEA, had told Reuters that the company planned to open a central office in London and grow its local team to about 200 people. The moves underscore OpenAI’s strategy to strengthen its presence in key markets, leveraging Elmas’ experience and knowledge in technology and sales.

Prior to Cursor, Elmas had a long career spanning over 20 years in software and security companies. He joined data security company Rubrik in 2023, where he led its operations outside the United States, following four years at Zscaler. His security and software experience adds value to OpenAI as the company continues to develop and advance its AI solutions in the global marketplace.

Brian McCarthy, OpenAI’s vice president of global sales, said Elmas will help companies get real value from the new technology. McCarthy, who also came from SpaceX, had been president of global revenue at Cursor and moved to SpaceX when the deal closed. This move of executives from SpaceX to OpenAI signals a strategic partnership and knowledge exchange between the two companies that could lead to new growth and innovation opportunities.

McCarthy is referring to Dali Rajic, OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, who started on August 24 after two sales leaders left. Both hires follow OpenAI’s decision to stop providing its models to Cursor, with access expiring on November 12. This decision could have significant implications for Cursor, as access to OpenAI’s models is critical to the company’s growth and innovation.

OpenAI is looking to increase its presence in Europe, pursuing enterprise customers and advertising sales, in anticipation of a potential IPO. This strategy underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its reach and strengthening its position as a leader in artificial intelligence. With the hiring of Elmas and the strengthening of the sales team, OpenAI is well positioned to achieve its goals and continue to innovate in the technology space.
