BMW iX4: The electric SUV with 689 km of range

BMW has unveiled the iX4 , an electric coupe -SUV that aims to change the game in the premium electric vehicle market. The BMW iX4 comes with an estimated range of up to 428 miles (about 689 kilometers) — an initial estimate based on EPA testing procedures — and is the German company’s response to the explosive growth of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers worldwide. The model is part of BMW ’s ambitious Neue Klasse program , which is reshaping the company’s entire electric strategy.

The BMW iX4 is not just a new electric car — it’s a strategic move in a rapidly changing market. According to data from the International Energy Agency, Chinese manufacturers accounted for around 60% of global electric car sales in 2025, with China selling more than 13 million electric vehicles in the year. European and North American manufacturers each accounted for just 15% — a figure that highlights the pressure BMW is under to accelerate its electric transition.

The iX4 is a spiritual successor to the gasoline-powered X4, which was discontinued without a direct internal combustion engine replacement. BMW has chosen to reposition the coupe-SUV as a purely electric vehicle, leveraging the new Neue Klasse that standardizes battery, software, charging and electrical architecture across multiple vehicle segments. Production is expected to take place at BMW's Debrecen, Hungary, under the development code NA7.

BMW iX4: Technical and other features and performance

The entry-level iX4 50 xDrive comes with impressive specs. It features a dual electric motor with all-wheel drive, delivering approximately 463 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The battery has a usable capacity 112.2 kWh, supporting an estimated range of 428 miles — subject to final EPA certification. Rapid charging from 10% to 80% is achieved in approximately 21 minutes under suitable conditions, while 10 minutes of charging can gain up to 184 miles of additional range.

Of particular importance is the iX4 's advanced thermal management system . Battery temperature directly affects charging speed, performance, efficiency and cell wear. The active temperature control system can prepare the battery before rapid charging, keep the cells within a safe range during intense driving and reduce performance losses in cold weather. For the future, BMW is planning a high-performance version of the iX4 M60 xDrive with 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque , expanding the Neue Klasse range into the high-performance segment.

However, such a large battery also comes with trade-offs. It increases weight, material use and cost. The coupe-like body improves aerodynamic efficiency over a conventional SUV, but the sloping roof can reduce rear headroom and cargo practicality. The final EPA will depend on production software, tires, equipment and certification testing.

Inside, the cabin features high-quality materials and cutting-edge technology, including a large infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster that offer a seamless user experience. Safety is also a priority, as the iX4 incorporates a suite of advanced driver assistance systemsdesigned to enhance safety and comfort while driving. These include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and automatic emergency braking.

BMW iX4 vs. Competition: The Battle with China and Tesla

The BMW iX4 will face stiff competition from both Western and Chinese companies. In the premium segment, the main competitors include the Tesla Model Y — the benchmark for electric crossovers — as well as the Porsche Macan Electric, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Audi Q6 e-tron and Polestar 4.From China, companies such as BYD, Nio, Li Auto, Zeekr and XPeng are exerting strong pressure, especially in the Chinese market.

BYD has a significant advantage due to vertical integration, proprietary battery production and wide price coverage. Chinese manufacturers are stronger rivals in terms of cost, while German brands continue to compete through design, driving dynamics, brand reputation and high-end interiors.
