Polestar 4: The New Luxury Electric Coupe SUV

The Polestar 4 has the potential to disrupt the coupe-SUV sector with its striking design, high-tech and 482 km range.

It is the latest model from the Swedish electric vehicle brand and is expected to be released in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2024.

In Greece, Polestar did not have an official presence until the end of 2023, but given the interest in electric vehicles and the ever-increasing demand, Polestar could expand to the Greek market in the future.

In line with Polestar's "design first" philosophy, the 4 continues Polestar's minimalist Scandinavian design philosophy with a limited color palette and an interior with minimal buttons.

Unlike the Polestar 2 fastback and the Polestar 3 SUV, the Polestar 4 is a mid-size SUV coupe that competes with the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback, Porsche Macan Electric and the most popular electric car in America and Europe, the Tesla ModelY.

Compared to previous models like the Polestar 2, the Polestar 4 is built on parent company Geely's all-new SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform, which will underpin the Polestar 5 sedan in 2025.

It marks the brand's 4th^car . The Polestar 2 is the second car, and the Polestar 3 is the third. The Polestar 1 was the first vehicle, which was a plug-in hybrid model that was discontinued in 2022 after three years.

The Polestar 4 is the most technologically advanced car the brand has ever built. Polestar has taken its design a step further, removing the rear window and replacing it with an HD rear camera, which eliminates the need for a rear windshield. The camera is designed to direct air over the car downwards, keeping water and dirt away from its lenses.

According to the car's designer, Max Missoni, this unusual, high-tech solution allows the rear roof rail to be moved rearward, offering rear passengers more headroom and a lower roof that gives the car a more coupe-like profile.

When sales begin in the U.S., the Polestar 4 will be available in two trim levels: a Single Motor with a range of up to 300 miles (482 km) and a more performance-oriented Dual Motor with an EPA-estimated range of 273 miles (442 km).

Polestar 4 Single Motor

The Polestar 4 Single Motor starts at $54,900 and comes well-equipped. Inside, a 15.2-inch infotainment screen running Android Automotive, Google Assistant, and Google Maps dominates the center of the dashboard. For clarity, it has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, and in front of the driver is a minimalist 10.2-inch driver management system that displays the Polestar 4’s speed, navigation instructions, and battery status. Additionally, standard equipment includes 5G connectivity.

The Polestar 4 Single Motor is equipped with a 100 kWh, 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack, with 272 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. A 200 kW permanent magnet rear motor is mounted on the rear axle. Despite having half the horsepower of its twin-engine sibling, the Polestar 4 Single Motor has a longer range of up to 482 km compared to 442 km for the faster model. Note that these figures are estimates. The Polestar 4 has not yet been rated by the EPA.

Polestar 4 Dual Motor

The Polestar 4 Dual Motor adopts an all-wheel drive system to handle the 536 horsepower and 507 pound-feet of torque. With a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds, it’s also the fastest car Polestar has ever built. The Dual Motor Polestar 4 retains the same battery as the single-motor version, which can handle up to 200 kW of DC fast charging. A DC charge will also charge the Polestar 4 from 10% to the manufacturer’s recommended 80% in just 30 minutes.

Interior and Color Options

In total, the Polestar 4 is available in six colors, with Magnesium (light silver) being standard. The remaining five colors cost extra. Electron (dark silver), Storm (darker silver) and Space (black) are an additional $1,300 option. Meanwhile, Snow (white) and/or Gold cost $1,600. Since becoming an independent automaker from Volvo in 2017, one of the pillars of the Polestar brand as an electric vehicle manufacturer has been its focus on sustainability. As such, the standard seats are made from 100% vegan MicroTech, a material made from renewable vinyl and recycled polyester. Buyers can also upgrade to Tailored Knit, a fabric inspired by the yarns used in sneakers and made from 100% recycled PET bottles.

Oddly enough, a Nappa leather option is also offered. The interior is available in either Charcoal (black/dark grey) or Zinc (light grey). In this way, the Polestar 4 maintains the minimalist aesthetic that has been associated with the brand since its inception.

Polestar 4 Interior Dimensions

The Polestar 4 can accommodate five passengers, and the luggage compartment has a capacity of 526 liters with the seats up. When they are folded down, the luggage compartment increases to 1534 liters. In addition, there is an additional storage space under the floor in the rear. In the front, there is also a small 14-liter for smaller items.

Polestar 4 Safety Features

The Polestar 4 has yet to be tested by the Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, the Polestar 2 received a five-star safety rating from the latter in 2022. Given that Polestar has Volvo DNA, it is expected that the Polestar 4 will be just as safe. Four Years Free Service

Unlike internal combustion engines (ICE) that have around 20,000 moving parts, the Polestar 4’s electric drivetrain has around 50 components. Maintenance costs should therefore be cheaper and repairs less frequent. The Polestar 4 is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty for 80,000 km (four years).

Meanwhile, the 100 kWh battery is covered for 100,000 miles (eight years). If the battery falls below 70% of its original capacity within the first eight years of ownership, Polestar will replace it free of charge. The corrosion warranty lasts for 12 years and will see Polestar replace any panels if they are affected by rust. The car's software is updated via over-the-air updates. Given Polestar's relationship with Volvo, Polestar models are serviced by technical experts at Volvo's official dealer network across the Americas.

Built with Sustainability in Mind

The Polestar 4 is assembled at Polestar’s Hangzhou Bay factory in China, a facility powered by 100% renewable energy. The car’s battery can also be charged with solar or wind power to keep its carbon footprint to a minimum. In addition, the majority of the materials used to build the Polestar 4 can be recycled at the end of the car’s life. By 2030, the brand aims to create a climate-neutral car. By 2040, Polestar plans to become 100% climate-neutral across its entire value chain.
