Microsoft fears hackers will exploit Machine Learning

Imagine if your computer could detect malware on its own without the use of antimalware software. This is something that could happen in the future, when machine learning becomes part of the operating system.

Machine learning may be the solution of the future, but Microsoft is choosing not to implement it in its software, not even in Windows 10 1903 build. The reason? Diana Kelly, Microsoft recently shared the reasoning.

Microsoft Machine Learning

" AI and Machine Learning can help us find early information about future attacks and see things that humans can't see. But we need to make sure we have cognitive diversity , " Kelly explained.

Machine Learning can be considered a double-edged sword. Making it a technology accessible to the general public means that hackers can use it. At present, only computer scientists and high-end engineers truly understand the current state of progress in Machine Learning.

“The teams building these models should include not only data security scientists and computer engineers, but also lawyers and privacy experts, so that a holistic approach is taken to building ML,” Kelly added.

An example of integrating Machine Learning into a company's daily routine is selecting the most interesting resumes from a pile of resumes. The process of sorting through resumes to identify the best candidate is a productive process.

Of course, hackers are following the advancements in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. These are people who use the technology to their own advantage. It should be noted that ransomware and cryptocurrency mining malware are two of their top creations based on publicly available technology.

A technology used to secure and preserve personal data is becoming a weapon for hackers and a nightmare for us.

"So far, they've tried some very interesting attacks, like changing just one pixel in an image so it doesn't identify with the victim," Kelly concluded.
