Last year, Apple decided to become more environmentally friendly when it came to manufacturing phones and introduced a new line of cases, known as FineWoven, to replace the genuine leather ones it had offered for its iPhones since time immemorial.

The new FineWoven cases actually use a material , which, however, did not hold up to time and general use. The new line of cases ages very quickly and over time coloring becomes stained and scratched, while they also get dirty quite easily, even though at $59, they cost the same as genuine leather cases.
Those who bought FineWoven cases seem to hate them with a passion and often return them for something else. The Cupertino-based accessories team has heard these complaints and is reportedly withdrawing the FineWoven line of cases altogether.

According to store availability checks conducted by Bloomberg, several products , including FineWoven cases, are now at their lowest levels of inventory. Such low inventory levels typically indicate the end of a product line, so next week Apple could retire FineWoven cases for the iPhone 16 series entirely and either bring back leather cases or introduce a brand-new material to take their place.

During the iPhone 15 launch, Apple poetically touted the FineWoven material as a luxurious and durable microtwill that feels like suede in the hand. What’s more, FineWoven is made from 68% post-consumer recycled content, with a reduced carbon, not to mention the other negative connotations associated with leather as a material.

As is often the case when brands try to replace natural materials with something more environmentally friendly, however, the user experience deteriorates and it will be interesting to watch how Apple will discontinue the FineWoven line of cases or what it will replace it with.
