The upcoming addition of Onslaught mode to Destiny 2 satisfies the long-awaited expectations of fans of the game.

We still have a few months to wait for Destiny 2’s next expansion, “The Final Shape,” which is set to release on June 4th. However, players finally have something to get excited about, thanks to a new stream from the game’s creators. “Into the Light,” the game’s next update, is launching on April 9th , and during the first of three scheduled livestreams about the update, something Guardians have been wanting for years was revealed. A true, honest-to-goodness horde mode. Let’s talk a little bit about Onslaught.

The first Developer Livestream for Into the Light gave Destiny 2 players about 40 minutes of footage from the new Onslaught mode. It's simply a horde mode, as you'd expect. Which is fantastic. While Destiny 2 has previously had horde-based modes, they've all been limited-time events, despite fans' desire for a permanent version. Narratively explained during the livestream as a defensive variation on the game's mostly offensive combat, Onslaught tasks Guardians (in teams of three) with fending off waves of Witness forces. This will take the form of a wave-based horde-mode, with a regular 10-wave version and a challenging 50-wave version. There will also be a higher-difficulty version of Onslaught to tackle, but that will require a prepared group of players rather than the lower-difficulty versions that can be tackled via matchmaking or solo. The mode will also be free for all players.

During the livestream, we see a game of Onslaught taking place on a modified version of the game's Midtown map, with some waves taking place at Pyramid Ship locations. The core element of Onslaught has players trying to withstand waves of enemies while protecting an ADU, a machine designed to keep the city safe. By taking down enemies, they collect materials that can be spent on installing tools like turrets, traps, and more during defensive phases. The variety of enemies seems to span the entire roster of villains in the game. This includes more challenging enemy types, such as Tormentors or Champions. Players must protect the ADU from enemies while also gathering materials, building defenses, and completing optional items on the map. It's similar to the horde mechanics we see in Call of Duty Zombies and other similar modes. It feels intense, strategic, and challenging.

The announcement of Onslaught couldn't have come at a better time. Destiny 2 has bounced back from the disappointing reception of the 2023 Lightfall expansion, which was also cited as the reason for mass layoffs at the company in October 2023, as well as the delay of The Final Shape expansion. Onslaught gives players something new and exciting to explore while they wait for The Final Shape to release on June 4th.
