Headphones are a very useful communication tool , especially during this time when most of us are working from home , and it is important to communicate frequently with colleagues and reduce environmental noise. Headphones are also very popular with gamers , who want to enjoy the sounds and atmosphere of games but also talk to their teammates. For these reasons, Microsoft allows us to connect headphones to our Windows 10 PC and do any work, quickly and easily.
How to set up your headphones in Windows 10
To use headphones, you need to plug them in. This is very easy, but can be tricky if you're not familiar with the available audio ports on your computer.
What options are there?
3.5mm jack: Older headphones are split at the bottom and have two 3.5mm jacks. One is for audio and the other is for the microphone.
USB: USB-powered headphones offer enhanced experiences thanks to built-in amplifiers and other features.
Wireless connection: Whether it's Bluetooth or a dedicated USB wireless receiver, these headphones are cord-free, allowing you to sit more comfortably without fear of getting tangled.
Depending on the case and the motherboard installed in a desktop PC, there may be ports available on the front, which can be useful if you have a short cable or no free ports on the back. The most important factor in terms of sound quality is the sound card on your motherboard.
Control audio output in Windows 10
After connecting the headphones to computer , you need to make sure that the Windows settings regarding sound levels etc. are correct. First, you need to check that Windows has selected the headphones as the default device sound output.
- Right-click the sound icon on the taskbar
- Select the audio device from the drop-down menu

- Select the connected headphones
This could have either USB or the brand and model of the onboard motherboard audio in parentheses. It depends on the type of connection your headphones use. You can rename each entry in this list to make it easier to tell them apart.
Now you should do a test, to make sure you have selected the right device and that everything is working properly. You can do this by playing a song on your PC or using the test mode in Windows:
- Right-click the sound icon on the taskbar
- Select "Open sound settings"
- Select Sound Control Panel on the right.
- Select the headphones (it should have a green tick).

- Click "Properties"
- Select the "Advanced" tab
- Press the check/test button
If you hear sound through the headphones, then everything is fine. If not, check if you have selected the correct device for audio output and if the headphones are properly connected to the computer.
Voice recording
After that, you need to select the microphone as the default input device and make sure the volume is turned up. The procedures are similar to those for headphones:
- Right-click the sound icon on the taskbar
- Select Open sound settings
- Select "Sound Control Panel" on the right
- Select the "Register" tab
- Select the microphone

- Click "Set as default"
- Open the "Properties" window

- Select the "Layers" tab
- Adjust the volume accordingly
Be sure to enable your favorite VoIP app or recording software to check the microphone.
Troubleshooting headphone-related problems in Windows
Make sure you are using the appropriate ports
Make sure the headphones are connected properly and are in the correct port.
Reinstalling drivers
If the headphones are not working, the problem may be with the drivers. Go to Device Manager and uninstall the drivers for the connected headphones. Restart the computer and reconnect the headphones.
Choose different formats
If you're still having trouble, try selecting a different input/output format in the properties window (use the steps for headphones above).
Try other headphones/device
To check if the issue is with the headphones and not your computer , try using another pair. Otherwise, try the same headphones on another computer.
