A brand new Redmi Note 7 Prowas given away for free by Xiaomi to a user whose phone exploded and burst into flames.
The company's move came after initially refusing to replace the device, and then asking the user to pay 50% to receive their new phone. However, Xiaomi seems to have changed its mind when the issue became more public.
The Chinese company even sent the man from Indianot only a new device, but also a backpack to replace the one destroyed by the previous device when it exploded.
Vikesh Kumar, who lives in Delhi, India, spoke about the horror he experienced to 91Mobiles on Saturday. Kumar was going about his usual activities when he noticed an unusual heat coming from the Redmi Note 7 Pro in his pocket.
He immediately took his phone out of his pocket to check it and was horrified to find that the device was emitting smoke. Without wasting time, he threw the device from his hands, which accidentally landed next to his backpack and a few seconds later caught fire, destroying the backpack as well.
Kumar said he was unable to put out the fire by any other means than using a fire extinguisher. He notes that if he had waited a little longer to throw the device away, he would have suffered very serious injuries.
After the incident, Kumar visited a nearby Xiaomi, where he was flatly denied a replacement for the device, even accusing him of it being his own fault. After much pressure from his side, the employees asked him to pay 50% to receive a new device. However, the company changed its stance after the incident was made public and the general outcry that followed.
This isn't the first incident of a Redmi. Last August, a man reported that his Redmi 6A exploded while it was still in his pocket.
