Mozilla's "Fission" protects users from Spectre attacks

Mozilla's project called "Fission" is finally bringing some fruitful results after a year of research. Mozilla has publicly announced the complete redesign of Firefox using "Fission", which will protect the browser from Spectre-type attacks.

These types of attacks have always been an issue for browsers, which is why Google Chrome began efforts to address the problem in May 2018. Now, Firefox is following suit.

The “Fission” project includes a technology called “site isolation,” which works by separating Firefox into isolated operating system processes. In other words, each website has its own process on the computer.

This project will go a long way in protecting users from Spectre and Meltdown attacks that steal highly sensitive data (passwords and encryption keys) from the browser. In addition, the attacks exploit computer processors and operating systems. Isolating websites will not let the attacks spread throughout the computer.

Nika Layzell, Firefox platform engineer, said: “Our goal is to create a browser that is not only secure against known security vulnerabilities, but also has built-in layers of defense against potential future cyber threats.”.

Although there is no specific release date for “Fission,” Layzell says the Mozilla expects it to be released by the end of the month.

The only problem with “Fission” that Firefox users might face is the high memory consumption, an issue that is also reported in Google Chrome.
