Firefox 65: New Content Blocking Controls on Desktop and Android

Firefox Firefox 65 is available for desktop (Linux, MacOS, Windows) and Android and brings with it a new interface that allows easy access to the Blocking Content section. There is a new small “i” icon in the address bar that allows you to easily access the content blocking settings. Firefox 65 also brings AV1 video compression support for Windows users and further improves the Task Manager to detect extensions and slow tabs, aiming for an optimal browsing experience. Mozilla has also released the beta version of Firefox 66.

The redesigned content blocking section arrives with Firefox 65 and you can access it in two ways. The first way is to click the small “i” icon in the address bar, go to Content Blocking and then click the gear on the right side. Alternatively you can navigate to Preferences > Privacy & Security > Content Blocking. Content blocking offers three options: Standard, Strict, and Custom. The last option provides more control, allowing you to choose which trackers and cookies you want to block.

As mentioned above, Firefox 65 also brings AV1 video compression support for Windows users. “Firefox now supports the AV1 video compression technology. Mozilla contributed to this new open standard, which gives everyone the ability to access high‑quality video. It can open business opportunities and facilitate entrepreneurs, artists and ordinary people,” the company explains on its blog.

Finally, the Task Manager feature has also been revamped and updated to offer holistic results on memory usage, tabs, and add-ons. You can download Firefox 65 for Android users here and for Desktop users here.

Mozilla has also released the beta version of Firefox 66 for Android and Desktop users. The new version will block the default auto-play audio. For desktop users, a notification will appear, asking for permission to allow the site to play audio. On mobile, it will play silently until the user turns the audio on themselves. You can download the Android beta here and the desktop beta here.
