Mozilla, the company behind the popular Firefox browser, has entered into a strategic partnership with Mistral AI, a French company specializing in developing artificial intelligence models. The partnership aims to integrate Mistral's models into Firefox Smart Window, an artificial intelligence-powered browsing assistant that is currently in beta. The deal was announced Wednesday in a joint post by the two companies, along with the launch of the feature in France.

Firefox Smart Window, which Mozilla introduced in August, is an innovative browsing feature powered by artificial intelligence. The feature allows users to summarize complex searches with sources, find pages they’ve navigated away from, and leverage their open tabs. The integration of Mistral models brings a new dimension to the browsing experience, as these models are known for their multilingual performance and ability to adapt to local languages and dialects.
The deal between the two companies is described slightly differently by each side. Mistral’s post says that Smart Window “is now supported on Mistral models,” while Mozilla’s announcement clarifies that it is adding the Mistral Small 4 as one of the options, allowing users to choose from a range of other models. This approach gives users the ability to choose the model that best suits their needs, enhancing their sense of control and choice.
France is the first new market for Firefox Smart Window, with official support for the French language, with the UK and Germany expected to follow later this year. Mozilla's selection of Mistral Small 4 was based in part on its ability to perform multilingually, which is critical for expanding the feature to new markets.
One of the central points of the Firefox Smart Window proposal is protecting user privacy. Conversations conducted through Smart Window are not stored on Mozilla servers by default, and model partners, including Mistral, have agreed to zero data retention. This approach is especially important in an era where online privacy is a major concern for many users.

Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo called the deal a stand against AI gatekeepers. “AI is becoming part of people’s everyday experience online. We want to make sure that doesn’t mean people are tied to a pipeline that serves the interests of a company,” he said. “A browser shouldn’t be a one-way pipeline.”
Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral, described the partnership as a partnership between “two open source champions” that brings “privacy, control and choice to the web browsing experience with the help of artificial intelligence.” For Mistral, which primarily sells to businesses and governments, the deal is a route to consumers, allowing it to reach beyond corporate customers to users worldwide.
The collaboration comes a few days after raising 3 billion euros at a valuation of 21 billion euros, underscoring the company's dynamic growth.
For Mozilla, this partnership is part of a cautious push toward artificial intelligence. Firefox users have reacted to previous plans for artificial intelligence, and in February the company added a unique setting that blocks all of the browser’s AI-powered features. Firefox Smart Window remains optional, and users can control which tabs and history it can see, ensuring that the use of artificial intelligence is in their control.

This collaboration between Mozilla and Mistral AI is an important step towards integrating artificial intelligence into everyday web browsing, offering users a more personalized and secure experience. With support for privacy and choice, Firefox Smart Window is expected to be a powerful tool for users looking for a more controlled and customized way to browse.
