Mozilla has announced a new controls section in the Firefox desktop browser settings , allowingusers to completely disable generative AI (GenAI) features .
“It provides a single point to block current and future generative AI features in Firefox,” said Ajit Varma, head of Firefox. “You can also control and manage individual AI features if you choose to use them. This allows you to use Firefox without AI while we continue to develop AI features for those who want them.”

Mozilla first announced its plans to integrate artificial intelligence into Firefox in November 2025, stating that it was completely optional and that it would incorporate the technology while putting users in control.
Mozilla Firefox 148: Check and disable GenAI features
The new feature is expected to be released with Firefox 148, which is scheduled to be released on February 24, 2026. Initially, AI controls will allow users to manage the following settings individually:
– Translations
– Alt text in PDF (add accessibility descriptions to images on PDF pages)
– AI-assisted tab grouping (suggestions for related tabs and group names)
– Link previews (show key points before a link is opened)
– AI chatbot in the sidebar (using well-known chatbots such as Anthropic Claude, OpenAI ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Le Chat Mistral while browsing the web)

Mozilla said user choice is crucial as more AI features are integrated into web browsers. The company believes it should give people control regardless of how they feel about the technology.
“If you don’t want to use any AI features from Firefox, you can enable the Block AI enhancements,” Varma said. “When enabled, you won’t see pop-ups or reminders to use existing or upcoming AI features.”
Last month, Mozilla's new CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, said the company's focus would be on becoming a trusted software company that gives users power over how products work.

“Privacy, data use and AI need to be clear and understandable,” Enzor-DeMeo said. “Controls need to be simple. AI should always be an option – something people can easily turn off.”
