The company also said it is gradually expanding its test of default end-to-end encryption for Messenger. “We know people want a place to connect and they want to know that those conversations are private and secure. That’s why we’ve taken the time to build a team of talented engineers, cryptographers, designers, and policy experts, all dedicated to developing default end-to-end encryption on Messenger.”

Over the coming months, more Messenger users will continue to see some of their conversations gradually upgraded with an extra layer of protection provided by end-to-end encryption. “We will notify people in these individual chat as they are upgraded. We know people will have questions about how to choose and upgrade individual threads, so we wanted to make it clear that this is a random process. It is designed to be random so that there is no negative impact on our infrastructure and chat . This also ensures that our new end-to-end encrypted threads will continue to provide users with a fast, reliable, and rich experience in Messenger.”
