In a previous article, we reported on Cellebrite of hacking the iPhone X and extracting data stored on devices despite their password protection, and now a US-based company claims it can do exactly the same for just $15,000.
The reason is Grayshift, a company that sells two different hacking packages for iPhones, one of which costs only $15,000 and includes 300 attempts.
Forbes believes that this 300 attempts refers to the number of attempts the hacking to break into the iPhone. Since there is no guarantee that unlocking the iPhone is possible with this limited number of attempts, Grayshift also offers a second option that costs $30,000 and includes unlimited uses.
Called GrayKey, this hacking solution should be able to crack any iPhone, although no details were given on which models and iOS versions are supported. There's a chance the tool will only target iPhones that aren't running the latest version of iOS.
Surprisingly, however, hacking an iPhone has often proven to be a rather ineffective solution, since Apple has implemented security systems specifically for this method. For example, the time between passcode attempts increases after many incorrect attempts, so the more failed attempts, the longer you have to wait before trying again.
While such news may be extremely exciting for many Apple customers, it's important to note that physical access to the device is required to perform the process. And obviously, given the high price of the package, it's more likely to be used against criminals and terrorists in the context of investigations.
It remains to be seen how Apple will react to all these claims, but one thing is for sure: with so many security aspects and a growing number of companies claiming to be able to unlock devices, the iPhone is far from the super secure device we all thought it was.
