VPNs, or Virtual Private Networks, are very practical tools for those concerned about reducing privacy online.
These days, it’s hard to surf the web without leaving a trace of your activity. Google and Facebook, for example, make billions a year collecting and selling information about your online behavior. VPNs, which are built, maintained, and operated by private companies, move your computer’s web address to another location. Whether you need a VPN is entirely up to you. Your internet service provider won’t recommend or offer the service. It depends on whether or not you want to increase your online anonymity – and a lot of that depends on how you use the web. Here are some of the best ones out there:
- TunnelBear
-Download speed 64 Mbps
-Upload speed 63 Mbps
TunnelBear is quite good for the upload and download speed it offers.
- Private Internet Access VPN
-Download speed 33 Mbps
-Upload speed 26 Mbps
Private Internet Access VPN boasts over 3,170 servers in over 28 counties. Next to each country, the VPN displays the data speed (or average server speed) for each country so users can make more informed decisions about where they want to go (virtually) and how fast their data experience will be.
- NordVPN
-28 Mbps download speed
-Upload speed 29 Mbps
NordVPN fixes the web IP address and upload and download speeds perform decently.
- PureVPN
-Download speed 26 Mbps
-Upload speed 17 Mbps
PureVPN for iOS is quite user-friendly, but so are most VPN iOS apps hoping to compete in a crowded market.
- IP Vanish
-Download speed 25 Mbps
-Upload speed 8 Mbps
When you initially connect to IP Vanish, it defaults to a new web address, even within the same city.
- TorGuard
-Download speed 9 Mbps
-Upload speed 1 Mbps
TorGuard may send you to a remote server, e.g. in Australia, which may be partly responsible for the slow speed.
- KeepSolid
-Download speed 6.5 Mbps
-27.1 Mbps upload speed
The above results were still below average in the download speed department.
