Mediatek announces the new Helio P60 chipset

MediaTek has announced its new Helio SoC chipset series, the Helio P60. The P60 comes with a change of strategy for MediaTek, as the company seems to be emphasizing the “P” series rather than the “X” series.Helio P60

Last year's Helio X30 had only a few design wins over other chipsets. Overall, 2017 was an unfortunate year for the X20 and X30, as both appeared on a problematic MediaTek production process. With most manufacturers moving to custom designs for their high-end products and Qualcomm setting the bar very high in recent years, MediaTek decided to take a break from the "X" series for now and focus on the more successful "P" series.

The P60 is not considered a direct successor to the P23 and P30 because it is rather placed a step above them, at least based on its technical characteristics. Mediatek announces the new Helio P60 chipset

This is the first P-series SoC to use an extra 4x Cortex A73 cores up to 2.0GHz – a significant performance boost over the A53 cores of the P23 and P30. The performance cores are still Cortex A53 but run at 2.0GHz. On the GPU side, we see an upgrade, as MediaTek in turn switches from MaliG71 to MaliG72. The G72MP3 will have a speed of 800MHz and promises a 25% increase in gaming performance.

The modem subsystem remains the same as in the Helio P30 – it supports LTE up to category 7 3x20MHz CA and 300Mbps download speed, as well as category 13 2x20MHz CA for upload at 150Mbps.

The launch of the Helio P60 in smartphones is expected in spring 2018.
